Sorry to add a downer to a really feel good thread but it seemed topical given the unusual late summer heatwave - Sky News recently did a story on emergency first aid for heatstroke in dogs based on latest research from the RVC and survival chances increasing if owners administering cooling techniques before even taking them to the vets.

RVC Report

Happily all these dogs on here (including our family ones) look amazingly well cared for by ultra responsible owners but please pass on advice to dogsitters, park friends etc if appropriate…

Meanwhile Kipper just about making it to the local park with me last week - deaf, nearly blind and very very slow

This (VV) never would have been allowed back in the day 🙂

Now it’s left to Lyra to defend the family home 👻

I lost my Labrador today - Jess aka Polar Bear aka Red Dog

Our GSP is devastated - we brought her body back home after failed emergency surgery at 7am (Jess was only 8) so the GSO could make peace with the idea. Between the GSP and me our grief levels are at dangerous levels

Why is the world so cruel ?

Awful news and I really feel for you. Your sadness is a reflection of what a fantastic dog you have loved, and that has loved you. Try to reflect on the good times you had, and laugh at the fun and scrapes you had

Oh no - so sorry - that's terrible,

My Lab is six-and-a-bit now, and the time has flown. It feels like it was only a few weeks back that we arrived home with this cute bundle of fluff. Their lives are so short, relatively speaking, as you say it's viciously cruel to have that curtailed.

Stay strong, but don't be afraid of having a good cry.

Yes, fully echo this. we have a 2 year old lab and she is fabulous company, as was our old lab, whom we lost some time ago. Wonderful memories.

Sp sorry to hear this.
I lost my last GSP Holly two weeks ago, 2 days shy of her 16th Birthday. She's joined her brothers somewhere now, funnily enough one called Adder.
Dogless for the first time in nearly 20 yrs and feeling a little bit lost. Will wait awhile before getting another though, catching up on a few life things first, and I still get to train a large number of other people's dogs which is great.

They leave such a hole

Always tragic and even more so when still relatively young. Whilst our first two labs made it to a good age the third died suddenly aged 9. Mrs Corner swore blind we were never having another. Two dogs later…..
Nice touch to bring Jess back for your other dog to see her.
Just remember all the good times - dogs are wonderful❤️

Sorry to hear this. We lost our dog last year and he was only six which is far too young so I feel your pain.

Gutted for you - I’ve lost two dogs now over the years and it’s not long before the family loose another. The first dog was run over on holiday when she was chased onto a motorway by another dog so we had to bury in situ. I had my last dog cremated and planted a tree in her memory - scattered her ashes during little group ‘goodbye‘ on Devils Dyke - even had the Veterinary Nurse come.

Please don’t mock but I went to a pet grievance counsellor when I lost my Lurcher of 15 years -it may not be your thing but I found a few phone conversations really helpful . I don’t have the contact details anymore but you may find someone off this list you can talk to:

Really tough luck 🙁
