After 3 years of renewing my half-season tickets, thinking this is the year the Senators' young, highly talented core is finally going to break out and rip the Atlantic Division a new one, I've finally given up and accepted the fact that they will never fulfill their promise and gel into a powerhouse, even with decent defence and goaltending. Sorta like the Oilers in the teens when they were collecting first overall draft picks every other year and still missing the playoffs.

Gen X, 1968. Diehard Nordiques de Québec fan, 1979-1995. I even had Gretzky's rookie card, but lost it and my hockey and baseball (Go 'Spos!) card collections in a basement flood while I was living in South Korea.

Oh, we had some barn burners against Edmonton in the early and mid-80s... Remember, only Wayne scored more points in that decade than Petr Stastny. Jeez, the 3 Stastnys, Michel Goulet, Marc Tardif, Dale Hunter, Alain Côté, Moose Dupont, Daniel Bouchard, Norman Rochefort, Chris Simon, Wally Weir, Mario Gosselin, Wilf Paiement, Louis Sleigher, Mario Marois... What memories. Finally beating the Habs in the playoffs in 1982, making it to the conference finals vs the Islanders, then the Bruins... Any Jets fan will appreciate these rare feats of making it out of our division in those halcyon days, lol.

I love WG. At a time pre internet with little coverage of American sport in Europe, he was known by the mid 80’s as the records fell. Then that stellar career just carried on and on.

I realise he always had brilliant enforcers by his side. But to survive and thrive for that length of career at the very top, when relatively slight of build in a brutal sport, is a testament to WG’s bravery and total focus on winning.

I realise he always had brilliant enforcers by his side. But to survive and thrive for that length of career at the very top, when relatively slight of build in a brutal sport, is a testament to WG’s bravery and total focus on winning.

Well, that's why I hold Mario Lemieux in greater esteem. He had all the moves that Gretz had, but was big and strong, and could give and take hits as much as the goons. IMO, he would hold the record for most goals and points in a season if he hadn't missed so many games thru injuries and several seasons during his fight against Hodgkins Disease.

And Super Mario is the only NHL player to ever score all 5 types of goals in a single game: 1 even-strength goal, 1 power-play goal, 1 short-handed goal, a penalty shot goal and an empty net goal. That just boggles the mind, frankly...

I remember him playing, wasn’t he in the Olympics gold team managed by Gretsky?

My aunt died young of Hodkins Disease in about 1969. Ten years later there was a cure that C for most afflicted by it.

Even worse, the team relocated to Colorado in 95-96 and promptly won the Stanley Cup in their very first season there. The team was generous enough to ask Québec City if they would like to hold a second victory parade after theirs in Denver, but the mayor declined.

Lemieux was an outstanding player, as were the likes of Messier.

But you only have to look at The Great One’s records, not just personal (absolutely extraordinary) but with the franchises he played for.

Once in a lifetime talent.

Although if we're talking about players who completely changed the face of the game, that can only be Bobby Orr. Even the separatists in Québec grudgingly rate him higher than Lemieux, The Rocket, Jean Béliveau or (barf) Guy Lafleur.

Patrick Roy and his butterfly style come a close second, though, as far as revolutionizing the sport is concerned.

I'm in Edmonton this week for work and went to my first home Oilers game. Of course, there was no McDavid and the Oilers were shut out.

However, my Alberta colleague is also an NHL video judge, and he got me a guided tour of Rogers Place (a state-of-the-art facility which BLOWS the CTC in Ottawa right out of the water and into deep space) as well as a $$$ ticket in the 100s. So as a neutral, I was fairly well entertained... until Jersey scored their second goal, then the Oil just gave up and went through the motions.

Debating whether I should go to the game Wednesday vs Vegas. McDavid likely won't be back from injury until Saturday, so it could very well be a blow-out for the Knights. Don't think that's worth 100 of my hard-earned shekels...

I saw last night that McDavid has returned for the Oilers. The strange/funny move Edmonton made to make room for McDavid on the roster was to send Noah Philp back to Bakersfield in the American Hockey League. Philp was probably the hottest player for the Oilers and was being suggested for the Bill Masterton Award.

The feel-good story of the season for the Edmonton Oilers so far has been the emergence of Noah Philp, an undrafted 26 year old rookie who may become a candidate for an NHL award this year.​

Philp has shown incredible perseverance and work ethic to make to the NHL this late in his career, but it's even more impressive considering his retirement last season. Philp stepped away from hockey entirely for the 2023-24 season for personal reasons.

Philp hasn't gone into much detail explaining why he stepped away, only citing a gut feeling that it was the right thing for him at the time. Seeing him come back this season clearly on a mission to make the NHL roster and have the best year of his career has been incredibly inspiring, and well deserved for the Alberta boy.

Recently in the Edmonton Journal, Kurt Leavins suggested that Philp could win the Bill Masterton Trophy this season if he stays on the NHL roster.

The Masterton Trophy is awarded to the NHL player who best displays perseverance and dedication to the game, and Philp's story is exactly that. The Trophy is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, with three finalists to be named later in the year. If Philp continues to play in the NHL this year, he may have a shot at winning it.

For now, Oilers fans are just enjoying Philp's play as the fourth line center - something that should probably continue when McDavid returns from injury. Philp had a standout training camp and deserved to make the team, but after some ice time in the AHL to begin the year, his game looks even more polished now. Philp plays a reliable two-way game with speed, and that's exactly what the Oilers need out of their fourth line center.
