From The Toronto Star:

So long Sens!

CANADIAN PRESS

The Toronto Maple Leafs, buoyed by Ed Belfour's outstanding goaltending, used the Ottawa Senators as playoff stepping stones for the fourth time in five years.

Joe Nieuwendyk scored twice and Chad Kilger and Bryan McCabe had the other goals in a 4-1 Game 7 victory Tuesday night to send the Leafs to the NHL's second round beginning Thursday in Philadelphia.

Belfour was the MVP of the series, while Ottawa netminder Patrick Lalime melted under the deciding game spotlight.

The Senators outplayed Toronto in many of the games and had an overall 201-228 advantage in shots on goal including 37-26 on Tuesday. But the Senators were baffled by Belfour, who has good reason to smile on his 39th birthday Wednesday.

Toronto has won all four playoff series it has played against Ottawa, and now the highly-skilled Senators will have to spend yet another summer listening to critics describing them as choking dogs and demeaning their character. Some things never change.

Toronto took out the Senators without two of its most potent weapons. Mats Sundin was absent since leaving Game 4 with a suspected left leg injury and Owen Nolan missed the entire series because of a knee injury.

Kilger opened the scoring at 6:19. Tie Domi out-muscled Anton Volchenkov for the puck behind Ottawa's net and slid it to the front of the crease. Kilger banged it in. He was in seventh heaven. Montreal let him go on waivers March 9, and here he was scoring a huge goal in a Game 7.

Nieuwendyk beat Lalime knee high on the short side at 7:41 with a wrist shot from along the boards near the top of the circle to Lalime's right. Lalime made an attempt with his glove and missed the puck. He should have had it.

Nieuwendyk beat Lalime again, between the legs this time, at 19:39 with a wrist shot from the centre of the same circle. Lalime should have had that one, too. It was Nieuwendyk's fifth goal of the series.

Lalime was on the Ottawa bench wearing a ball cap and a glum expression when the second period began as coach Jacques Martin, grasping at straws, opted to go with backup Martin Prusek. Desperate move? Yes. Prusek had never appeared in an NHL playoff game — never faced a shot let alone dealt with Game 7 pressure.

A mere 22 seconds into the period, Vaclav Varada flicked in a rebound to give Ottawa fans some hope. Tomas Kaberle gave up chasing him too soon.

Belfour was at his best during three Ottawa power plays in the second period. His positioning was perfect. The more the Senators poured it on, the more body parts he found to get in the way of the puck.

Prusek looked shaky but the Leafs weren't getting many shots on him.

McCabe got off a high wrist shot from the blue-line though, and the puck whizzed past Prusek at 7:59 of the third for a three-goal Leafs lead. Robert Reichel won a faceoff in Ottawa's zone and slid the puck to Kilger, who relayed it to McCabe.

The Leafs weren't sitting back trying to protect the lead as they had previously in the series, and an aggressive forecheck frustrated the Senators time and again.

Domi took a holding penalty at 16:31 and Ottawa tried and tried again to get another goal. But Belfour wouldn't allow it.

Notes: Both teams were 0-4 on power plays . . . The Leafs scored the first goal in all seven games . . . Toronto is 5-0 in seventh games at home since losing to Los Angeles in a 1993 conference final . . . Ottawa is 0-4 all-time in Game 7 of a playoff series . . . Toronto is 16-8 all-time in the postseason against Ottawa . . . The Leafs will play in Philadelphia on Thursday and Sunday. Games in Toronto are Wednesday and Friday . . . The Flyers beat Toronto 6-1 in Game 7 of a first-round series last spring . . . During the regular season, Toronto lost three in a row to Philadelphia before a 3-2 road win March 18

Leafs and Flyers...guess that's The Leafs season over with. Have The Leafs ever beaten Philadelphia in the playoffs? They came close a couple of times, were ahead 3-1 in one series I believe but still blew it.

Still, at least we beat Ottawa:drink:

Bet they do not realise the people of GB slag them off as well :lolol: :lolol:
I also think that Philly may be too strong for us but hey, If we get Juan to support them there is always hope:lolol:
