Natterjack, just a quick question if you get a moment. The roof is sitting on those temporary supports so when its time to remove them I was wondering how those supports will be removed. Will a guy with an oxy-acetyline thingy come along and chop it up while the roof collapses on him? Or perhaps there's another way?

I doubt whether the HSE would allow such draconian measures as you suggest. Also, the roof would probably end up in a great heap on the pitch.

From what I've been led to believe, the roof will be lowered by small amounts at each support tower in turn to spread the load evenly around the 'ring of steel' onto the thrust walls and foundations.

This is one of the questions we asked Martin Perry on the stadium tour.
As Natterjack said, the supports will be lowered gradually so as to slowly transfer the weight of the roofs onto the ''ring of steel''.

Those two arches are attached to the ring of steel, and once the supports are lowered, the arches are shaped in such a way that they ''want'' to lean backwards away from the pitch. They will effectively be pulling against each other to hold the roofs up - think of it like holding hands with someone opposite you and both leaning back to counterbalance each others weight.

Once this has been done and the steel has settled into place (the roofs will lift a couple of feet when the arches first take the strain), they can then start putting in the translucent blue glass in on the roofs.

Its an INCREDIBLE feat of engineering.
