i was pleased with the performance but disappointed that we didnt get a point as i think we deserved one. if we scored 2 without leon knight, im not too worried at the moment. jarrett and molango need to improve their control. we should be in for a much better season than last time round in this division, but i will see what happens in the next few games. nicolas and reid played well together. only disappointments for me were - virgos passing, curries fitness, the control of molango/jarrett.

Cullip MOTM? Someone's aving a larf - hesitation in our own box for their first goal, some crap free kicks (second or third one of which effectively led to their third goal).

I wasn't at all disappointed with the result, we played OK - but some of it was reminiscent of the Hinshelwood era....basic defensive mistakes gifting the ball to the other side, and well-taken goals resulting in a defeat.

Molango looks good (especially that run down the left and superb cross about ten mins from the end). It was good to see Jakey score a very nice goal, and Jarrett had some good touches.

Looking forward to Tuesday - but it's a bit of a "must win" already.

We did ok against a well organised 1st division side, they will finish near the play offs.We have got to get into the division mentally very quickly, that was the main difference they were thinking quicker. We can always chase and put the effort in but the team has to react quicker.Cullip lost Kitson for the first, the 2nd he ran on to the ball unchallenged,Harding should have dealt with the 3rd and Currie (I think) gave it away on the edge of their area.It is going to be a long hard season again and lets all hope we can improve on the last time we were in this division.Tuesday should be a good test to see the side who has improved from last season. Not upset today thought the side gave a good account of themselves.

Argghh!!!!!!!!! Blooody frustrating, Reading, if not there for the taking today, certainly were there for taking a point off. But overall, it was a satisfactory performance without our two best non-defensive players Leon and Chippy.

McGhee's 4-5-1 was inspired I thought, it allowed him to pick the superbly creative Jarrett without compromising the basic defensive shape of the team.

To be given that dream start and yet not capitalise on it was a missed opportunity. Having watched Reading daydreaming and hand us a goal, it was shit that we then repeated that mistake straight away for Kitson.

No matter - we got our heads down and McGhee's meticulous planning paid dividends. Although Reading were the superior team in terms of possession, our strong shape meant they were unable to create any real opportunities. Charlie was at his tigerish best, Reid and Nicolas were alert and tidy in support of him and Jarrett and Currie gave us the passing options.

All was going to the McGhee plan until the Oatway injury - this disrupted us massively. The careful defensive screen errected in front of Sidwell, Harper and the rightwinger Glen Little (close to their best player) evaporated.

They marched our midfield back to the edge of our penalty area and a few slick passes gave Harper a terrific goal. Real quality. Best goal of the game, the only one not direct from a mistake, Reading probably deserved their win on this piece of play alone.

This second goal f***ed us big time because the gameplan had to go out the window and we had to chase the game. We don't have the players that do that too well. But credit to McGhee again, he made the decisive move and reverted to a 4-4-2 and Jake.

We trod water at this stage and Reading could have killed us off when a header hit the post. It took a very unfortunate mistake from Harding to sink us, but boy, a great finish from the excellent Nicky Foster.

It was a defensive error that let us back into the game, somehow Jake was left unmarked in the six-yard box but he finished well. We pressed well then but frustratingly the 3 or 4 chances we had for the draw were not taken, neither Jonah and Currie taking charge of good free kick opportunities.

What struck me about this game was that the difference in class from Division 1 from Division 2 could be seen in the attacking and not the defending.

The two goals we got were pretty soft and frankly we faced many more determined and efficient defences than that last season! But the class of the second goal, and the explosive finish of Forster, is the warning to Albion, that mistakes will get punished more frequently at this level than they were last year.

I'm heartened to be honest, because I still think the strength of our team is defending and if we can get the first team midfield out in front of our strong back 4 and a fit Ben Roberts, I think Reading will find it much harder when they come to Withdean.

Not too much significant in our offensive performance, Reading gave us two soft goals but credit to Maheta and Jake for their calmness and skill in taking these chances.

People will barrack Virgo but I thought he was defensively OK, just his passing lacked confidence. McGhee has an interesting decision now whether to try and raise Virgo's confidence or plump for the in-form Hinshelwood. Harding too was solid but just made the one key mistake, but he will be the better player for it, he is twice the defensive player of Mayo. Cullip and Butters, no worries from them.

Reid and Nicolas, I find these two easy to confuse because their strengths look very similar. Both looked OK but were outclassed by the Reading midfielders once Oatway went off.

Jarrett was superb at times and his ability to protect the ball for not a huge guy is magnificent. Looking forward to him having Leon to feed.

Currie, I'm not a great fan of, but there was enough intelligence in his passing to justify his selection. He's not an orthodox winger in terms of dribbling past people, but a Beckham-type dead ball expert and crosser. This is what he has to be judged on and it is too early to say whether he will get that 1-year contract extended.

Maheta ploughed a lone furrow and his goal should give him great confidence. Should have a pen, a good league debut for us. Will not necessarily be first choice once Leon and Targetman is signed, so it shows we are developing some depth.

Oatway's injury is huge problem now for McGhee because Charlie's presence would have been vital in allowing McGhee to pick more attacking selections/formations for the next 2 games at Withdean. What he will do now is anybody's guess but a centre midfield pairing of Reid and Nicolas does not fill me with confidence I'm afraid. It is shit luck that we have the injury here in centre midfield, our big problem area.

As always LI, fantastic summary.

Only thing I would disagree with is Mayo/Harding.

Oatway will be a huge loss. Hopefully tomorrows tests will be positive and he'll be back soon.

We need Mayo back. Harding made the mistake for Swindons second play-off goal and today for Forster. I like him but would feel safer with Kerry.

Can't agree more! Harding makes some very poor decisions and has been lucky to get away with it before. He will be punished big time in this league

Sounds by all accounts that we played pretty ok, though to be fair Reading probably can play a lot better than they did today. Glad to see Molango and Robinson on the score sheet, should do wonders for they're confidence.

Still think we need another striker and at least one other midfielder (ala Brooker), but it boads well that hopefully we can have a good season and push for the comfort zone of mid-table.

We've got a young and talented squad that deserves a stadium to perform in.

Onwards and upwards!

I thought Harding was a bit unlucky. Don't forget Forster is one of the quickest players in the league, and he was also fortunate when he blocked the clearance that it didn't hit his arm or bounce off in a different direction.

Ref Harding, I think he was exposed too much in the first half, with everything Reading did coming down their right. In the second half, however, Reading did virtually nothing down their right....perhaps due to the arrival of Hinshelwood into midfield? As for the "mistake" for their third goal, that has to go down to bad luck - I reckon most defenders would have been pushed to get out of that one. Perhaps a shout from Kuipers would have helped?

In the match report in the News of the World, it gives as their moan of the match "The sun and some of the goals belonged to Brazil .So where was the atmosphere?.

Did Harding struggle because Currie was so static?

I would have preferred Hart to have played there yesterday.

Harding may have had an off day yesterday but I hope McGhee resists any temptation to bring back Mayo at this stage. Only a fully fit, enthusiastic Mayo would be any good to us this season and in his last "friendly" display I didn't think he looked up to much.

On NSC for over two decades...
and then Robinson, in a similar position to his goal effort, scuffed the chance of an equaliser.

Although this bit of the report is a moot point because there was an off-side decision that would have ruled a goal out if Jake had tucked that chance away. Would have been a bit of drama though!

I am not a patch on Coxy and don't have a photographic memory so excuse any errors but here is the match report on brightonfans

A very reassuring performance in the searing heat. Thought the player made a good account of themselves. Molongo and Jarrett both look like they can excel further with a bit of coaching. It was nice to see Kuipers back but his hesitancy at times caused problems for us.

Well done to the travelling support, top notch as usual.

Thanks to Kerry Mayo and John Keely for the half time entertainment i.e. this is out goal so p@ss off you reading twat, class when Kely tried to smack it as hard as he could at him!

I was encouraged by yesterday's performance. I thought there were a lot of positives to build on. Liked the look of Jarrett, Molango looks lively, was making good runs across the reading back four, and I think could form a good partnership with Knight. I think we have more of a look of a side ready for this level already. Overall a good team performance, and confidence boosting in a number of ways.

Bring on Plymouth, a definite six pointer at this stage because of us both being promoted sides. Three points would set us up nicely for what could be a tough game against coventry after last nights result.
