League Cup first round matches have alwasy been below average. What was our largest?

In 1987-88 we only got 5,479 for the visit of Gillingham.

Contendors:

13,266 v Forest 1986-87 Round 2
20,763 v Spurs 1982-83 Round 2

First Round

18,273 v Cambridge U 1977-78
19,787 v Portsmouth 1969-70 (epic match)

17,581 v Portsmouth, FA Cup R3, 2 Jan 1993. Well done Westy.

Last time we had over 20,000 - as I hope we will on Saturday - was 26,467 v Arsenal, FA Cup R3, 30 Jan 1988.

Last time we had over 20,000 in the league was 20,874 v Chelsea, Div 2, 3 Sep 1983. If it beats that figure then it will be the highest home league crowd since 25,030 v Liverpool, 22 Mar 1983.

Saturday's 17,000 attendance - yes, I know it sounds dodgy - will have been the biggest for a non-competitive home match ever, beating the 15,768 v an All Star XI on 13 Nov 1967 for the benefit of Jack Bertolini and Cyril Hodges.

This was my 2nd match-not a bad one i thinks....

Arsenal in Jan 1988 26,647 (probably the biggest away allocation at the Goldstone)

Chelsea 20,874 1983-84 (This was our first League meeting against Chelsea, the Londoners being a lower division for the previous four seasons)

Arsenal was possibly the largest official away following but i'd like to know (although we never will) how many Chelsea were at 'that' match

Brighton were 1-0 up. Liverpool scored, but the goal was disallowed. While Liverpool players were protesting to the ref, Brighton took the free kick, went up the other end of the pitch and scored the second. Liverpool came back in the second half to end the game level!

Now THAT'S a memory!

In the first round, the 1969/70 Portsmouth match attracted the biggest home crowd. Biggest home crowd ever in League Cup was 33,500 v Derby in R4 1976/77.

I would not mind if we did not get promoted and won the League Cup.

Does anyone remember that game against Chelsea in 83, Chelsea were given half the north stand and the Lego stand, the north was a riot from the moment the whistle blew for kick off and Chelsea came over the fence for a ruck, absolute chaos! :catfight:

Surely the question has to be have we ever had any near 20,000 fans against Donny ever?

I was in the Northstand that day and remember the walkway between each section of the NS didn't exist, it was just rammed full of people, bit scary.

Yea, it was rammed. I remember my feet leaving the ground several times and just drifting down the terracing, a bit dodge. Was a great atmosphere though!

always heard Chelsea had in region of 8,000-game played with an undercurrent of nastiness-Arsenal had region of 8,500 but could have had 10,500.
