You do say some rather daft things sometimes. You cannot travel half way around the world to Australia and not see Sydney.

Why not?

The first time I saw the Sydney Harbour Bridge I thought what a great hulking metal eye sore.

Much rather stand atop Ayres Rock than Sydney Harbour bridge.

One allows you to see the wonderful vastness of Australia. The other lets you see where a bunch of posh chardonnay sipping twats live and play.

You're odd. With a rather large chip on your shoulder. But you'll refute that too, rather tiresomely.

I'm going to have to agree with Tyrone on this one. Perhaps if I could use France as an analogy...ask yourself if you get to experience everything France has to offer by going up the Eiffel Tower and looking at the Mona Lisa. Agreed, the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Manly Ferry are iconicly Australian, but if you really want to 'experience' Australia, I'd stay away from the capital cities all together. Places like Kakadu, the Kimberlys, the Flinders Ranges, the High Country, the Great Ocean Road, Uluru, the Barrier Reef, Cape York, Tasmania, the Barossa Valley all offer more of a unique experience.

No one is saying that it is the real Aussie experience though! Just that for a first time trip to Oz not to visit Sydney at all would be foolish

i would fly into brisbane, hire a camper for two weeks ,head up the coast to cairns/cape york. fly from cairns to darwin for a week in kakadu, fly to kunnunnurra for a week in the kimberleys.....you are not travelling at a good time exchange wise so i would not bother too much with the night-life factor, sydney is a magic city but you will spend a fortune there in no time..........like-wise melbourne, hope you have a luverly time.

you will have a pretty unique experience driving from townsville to darwin in a camper -van , there are loads of wicked places slightly off the beaten track , massive inland lakes teaming with bird-life,hot springs, gorges with clean white sand and crystal clear water -falls..........is your missus fit,i'm free for most of december...??????

this was a serious suggestion , i can't believe you aren't doing this....fucksake and tyrone you are emerging as a top KNOB there is nothing wrong with sydney,it is the best city in oz by far,it just costs a fortune to live there.

Cronulla 2005 begs to differ.

Bits I liked:
Perth - beautiful setting
The WACA - you must watch a game there, any game.
Fremantle - glimpses of old Australia
Kalgoorlie - go down a gold mine
Barrier Reef - make sure you go to the outer reef
Margaret River - for wineries and caves
Denmark - for Valley of the Giants and Green's Pool (William Bay)
Albany - for Little Beach (Two People's Bay) one of the finest beaches you'll EVER see
McClaren Vale - wineries south of Adelaide (avoid Adelaide)

Bits I didn't like:
Adelaide
Cairns

If you go to Sydeny do not miss climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, very good fun. Watching Auzzie Rules football is very good too, I saw Adelaide vs Port Adelaide, their derby, and it was so good!

Have to say one of the things that impressed me most about Sydney was when I got bundled into the back of a van and driven to the social club of something called the Parramatta Eels. Bloody enormous it was. Marvellous drunken gambling scenes! :drunk:
