I'm with LC and Dannyboy. At 12 weeks my eldest was vaccinated and ever since has had terrible breathing problems (and bizarrely a stutter when he has a cold).

I was very very sceptical when my ex-wife, in desperation, used a homeopathic remedy but you know what - it seems to work where conventional medicine just hasn't - and there's no way I'm having steroids pumped into his body thorugh one of those breather thingies which is what the doctors have advised.

Yes, I mix a few drops of lavender oil into a good vitamin E cream and massage it in. This was recommended by the clinic and hasn't made Romilly any worse. Of course, I only use it when she has no open sores. They also suggested tea tree oil as it can help to keep sores from getting infected but this made her worse.

I have used wheatgerm oil but the oil didn't help much direct (or in a cream) onto her skin, we have had much better results giving her wheatgerm baths.

Excema is rotten. One week something works great for Rom and the next week it makes her worse.

Yeah, well with skin problems it's not always about putting stuff on - and I mean ANY 'stuff'. Usually it's SOME kind of 'stuff' that exacerbates the problem.

There are biological soaps and shampoos which basically don't have any "hydroscarilergic dioxide" or "prethrolimpic bisulphate" (I made those up, but I mean chemicals in general). These hypoallergenic products dissipate the risk of reactions with your skin, and with each other, by not containing a chemistry set, or colours red b34 and yellow d19, or whatever dodgy fragrances whose chemical construction is not stated.

Clothes - washing them in harsh chemicals to get them clean, then adding softeners to make them smell floral and be flexible, can often be give skin trouble.
Are you or your kids laying in lovely soft sheets that are causing skin trouble to blossom, scab, crust and burn worse than ever? Nice smells, yes, but nasty effects can go with those pretty scents.

Most well-stocked markets have a biological and tested product that is an alternative for the sensitive skinned.

Body shop sell shampoos and soaps that are especially for sensitive people.
Ph balance of the skin is very important to some, and this can be looked into when buying cleaning products.

I'm not imagining that you haven't covered these possibilities, but some people spend loads trying to treat problems with more products, when all they ought to do is avoid the chemicals that are the root cause - and actively maintain the problems.

And that is the problem. There is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning your doctor about XYZ and if you are not satisfied asking for a referral for a second opinion. Any decent doctor should not have a problem with that, knowing they have done a thorough examination and are confident in their diagnosis/treatment.

London Calling - I really feel bad for you. I know how miserable little ones with excema can be. Have you kept a food diary and noted when his excema seems worse? We did that and that was how we found out the bananas were triggering Romilly.

To be honest we were hoping it go away.

The last few days has been a major mind change for me, I feel like a bastard for letting him down.

We have a lot of work to do, looking at his food, regulary using emollients, cleaning his linen and his room more often. He also goes to a nursery, whilst he is on a veggie diet, we are not tracking his food let alone all of the ingredients in the processed food. And going thru that large list of things that cause or worsen eczma. And then lets hope its not the cats.

Since we are strong enviromentalists, we tend you use ecover wshing products and good old lemon etc, Though recently I have noticed a few chemicals entering our house, thru free offers especially when you have a baby?

Luckily he prefers soya milk to milk, but he loves his yogurt and soft cheese and wheat cereal.............................and his bread............................................

Cheers everyone.

You've got soapy nuts?

That explains a lot:p:clap2:

Actually are they any good on nappies etc?

Haven't got the foggiest! I'll ask her tomorrow when she drops the boys round for the weekend.

I had a late onset asthma problem arising, that was caused by working with chemicals and thinners in paints. Added to bronchial problems and always getting bronchitis after every time I got a simple cold.

I started helping my immune system, by taking Echinacea and Goldenseal whenever I felt the slightest sign of trouble. Gradually, my own system learned to catch up! 5-10 days of popping holistic herb capsules, and away went the asthma attacks, and finally - away went the very symptoms, not even a wheeze in years!
The echinacea gradually worked, over a period of years, and even the repetitive bronchitis went away eventually.
I had to help myself and the treatment, by not drinking any alcohol, as that just set me back and negated the good work the herbs were doing.

It might not work for everyone I suppose, but for those who haven't tried it, I'd certainly recommend trying it.

Also, while I think of it - I put Eucalyptus branches, or Vicks (which contains the oil) in the bedroom too. Lavender is also supposed to help, and I often have one of those lavender cushions under the pillow or sat on the headboard.

Good to hear,

a strong link to herbalism here and whilst I was reading it, it reminded of the pages HOMEOPATHIC pages i have been scanning and interlinked symptoms to eczema.

Just to add homeopathic pills are ment to be person specific, so what works for one person may have no or a worst effect on another, plus ..............i forgot, I am that knackered.

All very interesting. Many of my patients, who are elderly, are now admitted with Polypharmacia. Put simply they have been prescribed a multitude of medicines over the years via their GP's which have reacted with one another. I have had some experience with eczema and various skin allergies whilst working at the General, where we had a wider variety of work, rather than just elderly care.

The dermatologists then, and this is over two years ago, were inclined at times to use homeopathic remedies, and watch the results. Most if not all were all on the positive.

Although slightly an aside. Many of the elderly patients I treat at present are drinking pro-biotic yoghurt in conjunction with anti-biotic therapy. the research is very shaky, considering the funding issues around the paper, but the patients like drinking it. Now I do wonder if in this case it is mind over matter, but with skin conditions and homeopathic remedies I have seen positive results.

Does live-culture yoghurt have any effect if applied to the skin?

Not suggesting rubbing the contents of the fridge over yourselves or family

I once bought a bottle of Aloe Vera gel that you take as a drink. I don't think it did anything at all - and it tasted bloody awful.

It's reputed to be most effective against thrush. Which is useful since nobody wants thrushes taking up permanent residence in their bushes.

Of homeopathy, I'm open-minded. When my sons were babies I used calendula cream and arnica for minor skin problems and bruises and was impressed with the results.

But whilst I also have slightly mixed feelings about vaccination - and am concerned that doctors might be using the vaccination status of children as an instrument of moral blackmail - there's no doubt that mass inoculation has wiped out fatal conditions like diphtheria and polio. Not wanting to contribute to their return, my sons had all their vaccinations. They avoided the MMR jab since it wasn't brought in until they were past the age to be offered it.

talking about mmr . They reckon that in a few cases the mmr jab can trigger extreme eczema and asthma. certainly seems that way with alex although we didnt work it out at the time.
