Thinking of taking the Mrs down to Nice in the south of France for a long weekend as there are some cheap flights available at the moment. Has anybody been before and can anybody reccommend a good hotel over there?

Thanks in advance

I've been there a couple of times. It's great at night, loads of good restaurants in the open squares down near the sea, and we found good and not too dear 3* hotels just using Expedia.

Get the slow train to Monaco, the views are excellent (sit the right side for the sea) and personally I found the beach at Nice a bit crap and far too busy, so for that go either to Antibes or even better Villefranche-sur-mer, about 10 minutes on the train.

I like Nice but it's not the cheapest place in the world. There are some great resorts near it though - Tooting Gull has mentioned Antibes, which is lovely.

Can't recommend cheap places as every time I've been, it's been through work and they've always been quite pricey hotels, but there are some bargains (relatively speaking) if move a bit away from the beach.

My parents have a house in a village about 20km away from Nice and I go there every summer. Nice itself is very nice, I recommend you visit the Vieux Nice - translated Old Nice and the port too is very nice.

I agree the beach can be very crowded so, if your looking for beaches, I recommend going a bit further to a place called Cap d'Ail and a specific beach called Plage Mala, it's superb. Also to a place called St Jean Cap Ferrat, which has nice beaches too - both are easily accessable from the main bus station Gare Routiere.

Up your alley
Superbe open air market Cours Saleya by prom(enade des anglais).
Beach like Brighton's - shingle.
Along coast to east: Villefranche, Cap Ferrat, Beaulieu, Monaco.
Latter a must do to see the flash cars, splash the cash at Monte Carlo casino and go to palace for tea with Princess Stephanie (if she's in of course).
Lots of pretty villages up in mountains behind.
I always stay at a friends in Monaco; hotel reviews at www.tripadvisor.com

Some good recommendations so far - Vieux Nice (old town) and the walk up to the headland to the east of the main beach are defininte highlights.

Not that impressed by the modern town - quite shabby in parts and the beach is nowt special.

Would recommend Juan-les-Pins, Antibes and Grasse for trips and there are some beautiful villages in the hills above the coast.

Also if your looking for a quality hotel I recommend the Negresco but it's not cheap!

Nice is a fabulous town to visit. Some great outdoor eating places in the port area and the Negresco - as suggested - whilst not cheap is an excellant hotel. I once shared a banquette seat in the restaurant there with an elderly lady who had a poodle sat on her lap and fed it a little of everything before she tried it herself - presumably didn't trust the chef not to poison her. Wonderful carpets in the main lobby under the dome and it also has pressure sensitive pads in the toilet floor which flush the urinal automatically as you step up to the plate :)

had a good time there, the beach is not as good as Brighton though, and it'll cost you an arm and six legs for a sun bed an brolly, When i went there they had a Noori's though! It was good getting my curry served up by a waiter with a (Del Boy) style emblem on his shirt, 'Noori's. Brighton. Worthing. Nice'

Took my first acid tab there in 1987 :) then went swimming in the sea, strongly advise you not to sleep in the train station as the police wake you up at 5am with fire hoses.
