Appraisals should not be about pay increases. They are there to discuss your performance based on agreed targets.

True but the system falls down if someone needs some training to obtain their objectives but there is no money in the F :censored: ing training budget!

However bloody annoying it is, its the only way for large organisations to "measure" their employees, and thus carve up the bonus pool....

I'd be pissed off if I was in a smaller organisation and it happened...its fairly obvious who pulls their weight when there are only a few of you involved...but when its 1000's of employees I kind of see the point (although HATE them with a passion)!

Our appraisals and objectives review determine your bonus payment that year. However, our process is so crap that if you get a good review mark, you get the same bonus as someone who hasn't. Makes you wonder why you bother!

It all sounds like one big paper exercise to me.

It's very simple to understand both rules in the world of the self employed.
Rule 1. f*** up and you won't get paid.
Rule 2. As above.

I long for the days when it was fine to come in and just do your job. Now everyone is forced to "think outside the box" and go "above and beyond", team building and all that horseshit. I supose if you love your work you want to go that extra mile or you need promotion but if like me, it is a stepping stone to other pursuits it is laborious and dull.

Yep and a new super electronic way to capture it all which is absolute pants. 19, 500 employees without a clue how to operate it

Its because in the old days, we either worked down the pits, in heavy industry or were in the forces.

there was no need for teamwork you just did what the f*** you were told and got on with it. there was none of this touchy feely stuff, no compensation culture, the boss was the boss - no questioning authority.

I do 10 and find them worthwhile because they don't get linked to pay rises and we don't pay bonuses. I can therefore concentrate on setting objectives which stretch people's ability and drive their career in the direction they want to go.

Then I organise training for them to meet their objectives and review with everyone every month.

It's the link to pay that makes them worthless.
