Oceanic, if I had children who were...as you so delicately put it...hideously fat, then I would look at the reasons why. I am assuming that as I am capable of feeding myself a healthy diet then I should be able to do the same for children, though I must hold my hands up and admit that the only time I have ever fed a child was to give my neice a bottle when she was about 4 months old. I would probably seek the assistance of the medical profession, as the reason for their obesity would probably have more to do with their genetics than anything I had fed them.

You what? Why are you replying for another poster, are they ashamed to respond in person? f*** off.

If I had to think what it meant then I’d associate the word with the local chippy.

I suppose that would tie in with the thread topic.

If permitted to comment on your post before...

"What would you say or do if your children were hideously fat and the social services said we're taking them into care. It’s got nothing to do with you what other people do. You should worry about your own family instead of preaching about others."

I feel it is a form of child neglect. Children are not capable of working out what is good and bad for them and they are certainly unaware of the dangers of obesity. The parents have a duty of care to protect their own children from the dangers of obesity, but it would appear that many parents are failing on this front. Strict measures and punishments may be the only step forward.

What next, the local services taking Children away because they’re to skinny and must be neglecting them.

I would class myself as being thin, 6ft 2ins and less than 12 stone, but there is no way that I am malnourished...I eat really well but am fortunate enough to have the metabolism of a greyhound.

There lies the answer.
A wise woman (medically qualified) once said to me that a lot of it is in the genetics.
People are born into two categories - greyhounds and bulldogs.
The bulldogs can slim and exercise as much as they like but they will always look bulky and the greyhounds can eat as much as they want and they will not put weight on.
I wasn't overweight at all until I got to 45 and even now am still reasonably slim despite eating whatever I want.

There's a deal of truth in that theory, Yorkie. I was an extremely skinny child despite having a healthy appetite and I haven't grown very fat as I've got older!

However, while people have a genetic predisposition to be slender or chubby, you can create a lardy child quite easily if you stuff it to the gills with junk food in quantities that would sink a ship. And fat children have a habit of turning into even fatter adults.

I was a skinny thing for ages and am lucky to only need to think a bit about what I do at 43.

It truly can be a horrific experience watching what others load into their shopping trolley another tip for parents is take your kids every so often to McDonalds and you might be surprised at how well behaved the are compared to others !

Right, I am off to the gym...to maintain my svelte physique...will head to the supermarket afterwards to stock up on food for the weekend, will do a quick survey at the checkout and report back later!

Having been to a few eastern european countries in the last few years it struck me whilst there just how slim the woman where out there. The men were probably the same but I did not spend much time looking at them. It is definetly a Westernised problem because I reqad recently that Australia - contrary to popular opinion - is in fact becoming a country with a huge obesity problem.

The woman in Poland had the best figures I had ever seen. No flabby tummies pushing through crop tops there.

Is it purely down to the fact that we have that much more disposable income than other countries or just that there is so much choice now when shopping for food.
