Why is it strange? A lot of players who have serious injury and cannot play football full time can play for a part time club. The training isn't so rigorous and there aren't as many expectations.

"We got a call last week saying Charlie was looking for a club. We discussed it as midfield is the one area we need to strengthen but we thought he might be out of our range and so didn't pursue it.

"There is no way we can compete with some of the top spenders in the league and it could become an issue. Our first 11 is a match for anyone and if we can keep them all fit we'll be capable of challenging for promotion but the problem will come when two or three are ruled out."

So really they don't actually know how much he wanted, they just assumed.

Lack of ambition there from Boro' - just assuming that he would want more than they could afford and not even bothering to speak to him. Could it be that the management were afraid of having someone of his forthright nature around.
