I would reckon it's a higher percentage than you think especially amongst women. It was almost impossible to get a part time job in the 70s and even early 80s except for dinner ladies or similar. Then part timer weren't allowed to join company pension schemes until the late 80s.Not all people of OAP age rely on state pension.
I was part of a union taking companies to court for sex discrimination which we eventually won in 2003. I, personally, was allowed five more years.
