That looks pretty good actually. I've wanted a surround system for ages but really don't want speakers and cables everywhere. Is it as good as a conventional surround system? How good is the bass?

As I mentioned previously, would benefit from a decent subwoofer, not essential though.

I have a Panasonic 350w home cinema system which has rear wireless speakers. The rear speakers are connected to a module which plugs into the mains so there are no trailing wires from the receiver. Takes about 10 minutes to set up out of the box before you start tweaking around with it for the next two days. If you are going to invest in a surround system make sure it has all the connections ie hdmi , optical and co-ax audio inputs/outputs etc.

A mate of mine was talking the other week about a surround sound system he bought recently from Richer Sounds for about £350 that has NO speakers, other than the main base unit itself. Apparently it doesn't need speakers to achieve surround sound - it just transmits the sound and "bounces" it off the walls.

Sounds like complete bollocks to me, frankly. But I'll be popping round his new gaff some time over Christmas so I'll have a little looky-looky-touchy-feely.

what did you think of the surround system then

Hi I have a Yamaha YSP900 which I use with a Panasonic 50" tv and highly recommend it.

I had a demo in the shop and it blew my mind so we decided to go for it. Being a girlie I didn't want load of wires in my lounge hence why we went for it. Obviously it depends how much clutter you have in the room and the less stuff the better the sound. To set it up you have a wire and an aerial which you place in the middle of your room then you have to leave the room while it sets itself up (the odd noises coming from the room are really strange) but then after about 5-10 mins its all done

You have to leave the room? But surely it has to take into account the human-shaped blobs that will normally be sitting in front of it? And maybe a cat or two.

Hi all

I have one of these Yamaha YSP-900 boxes and my only complaint is that I have to prop the unit up on two books in order to make enough room for the optical cables to plug into the sockets on the box without pinging out again.

The optical cables I have are Cambridge Audio (bought at the same time as the box) and the solid 'plug' part plus the bend in the cable is about 5cm, whereas there is only about 4cm clearance between the socket and the bottom of the unit (you have to push the plug 'up' into the socket).

If any one else has one of these and uses optical cables can you let me know what brand of cable you are using?

in fact Yahama does a whole package of these systems for different size tv's and there is usually 3 different qualities in each tv size range.
