It definitely doesn't need to be the card that was used to pay for it. But a card does need to be inserted although I never understood why as it pretty well immediately spits it back. Assume it's just part of a ticket buying process that they didn't adapt properly for pre purchased tix

A number of banks now issue long number sequences to withdraw cash without a card. Call or use the app to get the numbers, enter at any of that bank's cash points... Instant cash. Then he can buy ticket himself with any need for him to have money, cards or phone.

Silk arrangement is what you need ideally. That's the process of going to your local station and buying the ticket for him to be issued at Carmarthen.
Alternatively any bank card should issue the ticket from the machine, travellers name or not, as long as he's got the correct code.
Edit: That information was correct when I used to work at Brighton Station, so may be 7 years late. Or on time, for the railway depending on how you want to look at it.

FFS I would have thought the solution is obvious.
Simply drive to Camarthen, meet your friend at the railway station and buy him a ticket for the next available train to Bighton. Then drive back to Brighton and meet him at the station when his train arrives.

Cheers for the advice. we've been close for 35 years, his fiance ended her life over their debts a few weeks ago, since then he's been spiralling into crisis in every part of his life... now wouldn't be a great time to ditch him....
SINCERE THANKS to everyone who made a positive contribution to this thread. He made it home yesterday. It turns out that you don't need the card you booked with, you just need a valid card (in anyone's name), he was (eventually) helped by revenue officers at carmarthen and swansea. Thank you, NSC

I apologise for my light-hearted response to what it transpires is obviously a very difficult and heartbreaking situation for you and your friend.
I'm glad you have managed to get your friend back to Brighton - and that in amongst the flippant replies like mine - you also managed to get the useful information you needed. At times of personal crisis it is amazing that NSC continues to remain a force for good.

Everyone should have a best mate like you mate. You should be proud of looking after your mate when he's at his lowest point. At the same time, a word to the wise: don't allow yourself to bit by bit slip into the role of full time carer. At some point your mate may need to be placed into the care of the appropriate agencies. There's no shame or guilt involved in that. You've gone the extra mile already. Many wouldn't. Any real need for cheap point scoring here? The two guys who have apologised for their posts are two of the most decent posters on the entire board IMHO. Their posts were based on the information initially made available by OP - all of which did appear to make his mate seem like a complete f*ck-up, has to be said
