The problem with this type of quiz is that if you get one in the wrong place, then another must be wrong too, so not many high scorers yet. It's trickier than you'd think it should be isn't it.

Won't be for long, have you driven up the A264 lately, Crawsham is well on it's way.

It was a lovely County Town with loads of individual shops (e.g. had a superb used book shop) 25 years ago when I moved down to get hitched to Mrs Jakarta, now as Chavvy as they come and really don't have any desire to go there.

A good friend of ours is upping sticks from Southwater and heading to Norfolk/Suffolk borders, having lived down here for 50 years, he just can't take the ruin of the district.

Can’t say I’ve been to Horsham for years, I worked in a house in Causeway about 20 years ago, really nice road near the main shopping centre. Other than that I don’t know much about the town.

This is based on local authorities rather than towns, which is daft really. Leeds is easily the biggest, as Manchester is split between City of Manchester, Trafford, Salford, Oldham, Stockport, etc. Equally Nottingham is split between Nottingham, Gedling and West Bridgford.

It makes far more sense to consider conurbations / urban areas.

You have a good point. Submitted my answer and then went googling.......so many variations on town/city, authority v boundaries, ad infinitum.

But.......I was surprised at the biggest population of those listed, subject to the vagaries of the above.

Leeds by far the biggest i would imagine as it covers a huge area from where I live about 20 miles eastwards and 10 miles southwards.

This is based on town and city population size as per the 2011 Census. According to the source "The table was compiled using 2011 Census, Key Statistics for Built-Up Areas in England and Wales, pubished by the ONS on 28 June 2013. The names and populations of all built-up areas and built-up area sub-divisions recognised as towns were extracted and included in the list."*

I couldn't tell you if that's based on local authorities or not. Just a bit of fun to explore the relativre size of towns that we all know pretty well but perhaps don't know their relative size. Thanks for having a go btw.

* Should make it easier for those who do want to look up the source!!

I know a few of these, and emphasise a few, so I'll go with:
Manchester
Newcastle
Leeds
Bristol
Nottingham
Brighton
Middlesbrough
Norwich
West Bromwich
Bournemouth

Hmmm rather like you, l think l know a few, but certainly not all. Bristol is a bigger city than many think, so l'd elevate that in the list.

My shout is . . .

Manchester
Bristol
Newcastle
Leeds
Nottingham
Brighton
Middlesboro
Norwich
West Bromwich
Bournemouth

Haven’t googled this but suspect Manchester is misleading and probably quite small in comparison on its own to say Leeds and other metropolitan cities and larger towns. Whereas Greater Manchester is made up of 10 boroughs and would be amongst the highest in the country behind probably London and Birmingham.

Tried this before, The problem is the definition of town/city boundary. Greater Manchester conurbation makes is bigger than Birmingham (is West Brom part of Birmingham/West Midland) Is it Leeds or Leeds/Bradford, Bournemouth is huge (takes in Poole), I think the football team it technically not in Bournemouth. Bristol is always a surprise at how big it is

Here are the correct answers.

Very surprising I think. Rank is where that town/city ranks in the full UK list.

Source is here. http://lovemytown.co.uk/populations/townstable1.asp Along with an explanation of where the data came from. It's an interesting analysis because they separate Poole from Bournemouth for example. So this is the best list of actual town/cities I've seen.

This data has separated Bournemouth from Poole for example and looks at individual towns as recognised by the census, not conurbations. Leeds/Bradford for example is part of a very large conurbation, but I guess your definition would at least include Leeds (474k) and Bradford (350k) which this list manages to separate into different towns/cities. West Brom is a town in it's own right, despite being adjacent to many others.

It's not surprising in the sense that these references are clearly to the actual/town city itself rather than the metropolitan area. I know the population of Manchester is 2m + but I'm thinking of the metro area rather than the city.

I think those figures are wrong though. Leeds is bigger than both Manchester and Liverpool in urban population.

Leeds are bigger than everything, mind. Except Crawley.
