I'm looking to buy a new TV as my old one's knackered... Don't want to spend a fortune but want something fairly decent. Fancy a 37" job, want to spend max £400. Would I be better off getting a 32" from a better manufacturer? Where should I buy from? Help?!

First stop should be Churchill Sounds just around the corner from you on Western Road. Independent shop and great for advice :)

Get yourself a copy of "What HiFi Sound & Vision" or "Home Cinema Choice" and buy the best reviewed one you can afford. Those guys look at all the kit that comes out, and they have the means to provide objective reccomendations based on their vast experience, and the ability to look at them all in the same light so to speak.

If you go into a shop, I don't care whether it is independant, or a chain shop, if you ask for advice, the guy is a salesman, and he will try to encourage you towards whatever is good for him, commission wise.

Quite correct. But the reviewers are also in the pockets of the electronics giants. :)

It has been said in the past, however, I am confident in both of those two mags. Now "Which" I wouldn't trust, neither would I trust a number of other mags, especially the American ones.

I can vouch for that. Briefly earlier this year I was doing PC Support for Currys (don't buy from them, their technical support is a sick joke) and it's astonishing how bad TVs are. Add to this the fact that you can't get the spares for a lot of TVs, especially if they were originally sold cheap as end of line.

Check out the price (including delivery) and read the satisfied customer reviews on Amazon for the Toshiba 32AV555 32" Widescreen TV and you'll look nowhere else. Quite a stunning piece of kit. Got one a few months ago and it's a beauty. Forget 37", 32" is more than adequate.

definately get a smaller size better brand. in many normal size living rooms a 32" is all you need, too big and you'll see the pixels and it looks crap. i got a 26" (Pansonic 26LXD) for my large flat lounge and its fine. get a 100Hz refresh model as its much better for sports.

as for insurance, anything is covered by law to be fit for purpose and most people expect that to mean a year. most failures are either in the first few weeks or at the end of life (years away) so unless you drop it or spill somthing on it, waste of money imo.

dont buy in a shop , buy it online and youll save loads and you dont have to lug it around.
read reviews of the ones you are looking at buying . i find cnet reviews is good
i bought my 1080p toshiba regza 37" from beyond television, the company was good and the prices are cheapest i could find . but i think they use city link and the first 2 they sent us were nicked in transit
