O/T Should old people have to retake their test

I'm not sure it's an age thing. There are folk of all ages who should not be driving. If there was a dedicated traffic police out there instead of policing via camera, then bad driving would be picked up and dealt with.

In theory regular retesting of drivers is a good thing, but where are all the Testers to come from. At the moment there is a shortage of examiners. Who is going to meet the cost? We pay enough in "driving/car" taxes already.

I'm now 63 and "retired" (never been so busy). Used to drive 40,000 a year now 10,000. I know my reactions are getting slower so try to drive accordingly. I know I make mistakes. Each drive I give myself 10 points to start and deduct a point every time I reckon I get something wrong. It's a red letter day if I finish the journey with 10 points. Silly game I know but it makes me think about my driving.

I hope I have enough sense to know when to pack it in.

What really bugs me is people not using their indicators. Nearly went into the back of someone last week who decided to turn into a road without indicating. Also, the car in front of me on the A12 last week had no brake lights working!

Youre right about young women in 4 x 4's. Im a teacher and at the end of the day, the car park and path is chock full of these monstrocities, zooming up at 40mph even though there are kids wandering around, and blocking the school buses from getting out. This despite numerous mentions in the school bulletin not to use the school car park.

Particularly annoying when I'm in a hurry to leave for the Withdean for an evening game. Inconsiderate fools.

Hope you're not an English Teacher ! (Monstrosities)

Anyone who is banned for Any reason (especially drink driving) should have to retake a test

Sorry Swindon but in the light of recent events I doubt that anybody's interested in your opinion.

It's ridiculous to suggest making people retake their tests every 10 years. If there are 30 million drivers in UK that's about 3 million tests per year - a lot of time, money and expense for what?

Making people re-take their tests every 5/10 years simply isn't feesable. I'm learning to drive at the moment - I booked my test in mid-July and even now I haven't taken it yet. If mandatory tests were introduced for everyone, you would end up with ridiculous waiting lists of around six months.

It just wouldn't work.

I think that from the age of 65, people should have to re-take a test every 5 years. My nan is about 83 years old and I'm amazed she hasn't killed herself driving. My mum tried to talk her out of buying a new car when her old one gave up a couple of years ago, but she wants her independance. Thing is, she just shouldn't be behind the wheel.
