Just cycling over to Ovingdean beach for a bracing kilometre. Any other NS-Sea Swimmers? It's clean (no you're not swimming in raw sewage), it's free and you're not getting elbowed or kicked every minute as you do in the pool. As an island race I'm always amazed at how few people make use of this fantastic natural facility.

Yep. It is fantastic - although this summer I have only been a few times. Not really for exercise though - more pleasure.

Bracing is the word at this time of year though - or maybe it is colder when you get out.

Shoreham Beach (Widewater lagoon end) mainly. Sometimes Rottingdean.

I swim in Brighton and Shoreham beach when I can. It's nice.

I love sea swimming. In fact I spent a week swimming from island to island off the Croatian coast last May. Utterly brilliant. Organised by a company called Swim Trek. Longest swim was about 2.5 miles. I would love to do the Hellespont crossing - following in the strokes of Lord Byron of course...

Sea swimming is great. People talk a lot of out-dated nonsense about the state of the water off Brighton.

I like the sound of that, how far did you swim in total? I managed to swim 2 miles in a pool (128 lengths) back in the summer, imagine it is a little easier when you don't have to keep turning and actually have someting to aim at.

Big fan of sea swimming in Brighton, love it.

But a) I'm not a fan of the "jumping in quickly" thing, cos I reckon that's a one way ticket for a heart attack and
b) I'm so obese that I often get harpooned by any passing Norwegians or Japanese

I normally go for one of the buoys off Ovingdean, which i'm guessing there and back is a kilometre, maybe less, maybe more (crap with distances), but this morning there was no buoy so I just did about 15-20 minutes going out and then turned to come back. For pre-9am in the morning it was cold, but bearable and I'm someone who suffers with really bad circulation in hands and feet.
