I think that might be the point. Becasue I don't know iPods, I have no reference. So I assume the Creative is good - it certainly does everything I want of it (musics and that's all).

Can't however say it is better than the iPod. Can say that the controls are simple and logical. Easy to use right from the start. Loading is easy and sound quality is great.

OK I've got an Ipod video that's nearly 3 years old, holds all the music I want and does everything that I want it to do...so how is a creative zen, phone or any other mp3 player so fantastic that I should dump my ipod for it. I keep reading how shit Ipods are from various people on NSC....so what am I missing or is it just inverted snobbery???

I don't think anyone is suggesting you should get rid of your iPod if it's doing everything you need.

The "anything but the brand leader" stance could be inverted snobbery, but the reviews online and the comments on here persuaded me to try Creative. And I felt that I got more bang for my buck when not paying for the iPod name.

I've got a more general question - does everyone have the "genre" of each track attached to their music?

Yes, I have the genre tag filled- but I don't really know why, as I'll never chose a track by genre, shuffle through genre etc. Also, gracenot (who fill in the info when you 'rip' cd's) have a variety of genres for the same artist. so, for example, The Who have been listed as Rock, Classic Rock and OST (Quadrophenia).
But, it's also cool to make up your own ie I have Spacemen 3 listed as 'f***ed up'.

And the point about ipod is it's reliance on itunes, so it's not snobbery as such, just that I, as well as others I'm sure, like to have the choice to which software to use.

IPODs are *not* reliant on itunes. I hate itunes, so I use Windows Media Player with a plugin called DOPISP which allows me to use it to sync to the Ipod with no problems. On to my second Ipod now, had a 4GB nano that I went swimming with at the Hard Rock Cafe (doh!), now I have an 80GB Video that I struggle to fill, but I also use it as a hard drive to move files between home and work - Windows recognises it as a normal USB hard drive.

I have an iPod Video, 80GB which I bought last year and it's never once been reliant on iTunes. In fact, I don't even have iTunes installed on any of my computers. I use Media Monkey to load and removes songs from my iPod which I can do on any computer that has it installed, including other people's computers. It doesn't sync unless I want it to. I don't understand where iPods are reliant on iTunes-maybe I'm missing something?

Seemed to be the general opinion whenever I asked people as I was contemplating getting one.

But, hey, very happy with my Zen- and the £60 I saved by not getting the ipod classic.

The 2 main problems with Ipods, but by no means the only problems are :

1. The stupid fart arsed way you have to download tracks on it.
2. I haven't yet met anyone that has had one for more than a year without it breaking.

1. It's the same as any other way of transferring files to a storage medium. Even if you use itunes, you tell it what you want to transfer, and it transfers them. If you use Explorer, you select the files, and drop them on the disk. Is there some other magical way, perhaps using mind control, that other MP3 players work?

2. Unless you include swimming with my last one, which is pretty much outside the warranty, the people I know that are Ipod owners have had no issues with them. Even if they break within the year, they are under warranty and get repaired. Have you carried out a survey of non-Ipod owners to see their breakage stats?

Lots of people are anti-Ipod because they are Ipods. Same as the Windows/Unix/Mac war that breaks out occasionally. It's funny to see how cool/uncool people can get over a piece of circuit board and a set of headphones!

If you meet me then 2 will be void.
