Purchased a new JVC DVD player last christmas for 250 notes. Iv had to take it back no less than 4 times with things gonig wrog it and Im thoroughly pissed off. However, the 1 year warranty is soon to run out. Im loathed to pay an extra £109 for 5 years cover but at the same time I dont want to be forking out for it if breaks down in March. Should I just forget working on the fact that within a year it will be even more out of date and I should buy a new one or stump up £109??

Go to WH Smith or Richer Sounds, get a CyberHome one for 50 quid (multi-region and RCE playable). That way, if it packs up you've only spent 50 quid. (Had mine nearly 2 years without a single problem!).

With the price of DVD players nowadays, there's NO WAY I'd fork out £109 for an extended warranty, particularly on a player thats let you down so much. Put that money towards a decent new one, and cut yer losses on the JVC. I've had a Toshiba for 3 years, never had a moments trouble with it.

Spend a bit extra like I've just done and get a Philips DVDR70 (Recordable DVD) for around £240
Excellent quality, easy to make region-free and once you've used DVD's for recording you'll never use your video again

Sorry to sound a spaz, but does that DVD recorder basically work in a similar way to Sky+ ?
And does it also record/write onto discs ?

sorry to sound like a dork, but yes I believe it does (you can do all the pausing and advert skippings in the same way too). The DVD recorder part just allows you to achive the stuff you've saved.

A DVD recorder does record onto discs (you need to be careful which DVD recorder you buy though as there are three formats vying for space at the moment, in much the same way as VHS and Betamax were 20 years ago.

Although an alternative to Sky+ it is not.

- Yes you can record while watching something you pre-recorded, but you might want to record a short program while watching 'proper' DVD - you need to keep your old player as well
- if you use the in built in analogue (yuck) tuner then you get a sh*t picture anyway so it's pointless using DVD - you might as well stick with VHS
- If you use external digital decoder then you can only record the channel that it's tuned too, i.e. can't watch one channel while recording another, which I think is a pretty basic requirement.

That was always the problem and what stopped me buying one when they first came out, and were the problems that Sky+ resolved.

Sky+ is down to £199 now and with the free subs when you take the Sports or Movies, it a f*ckin' bargain. No competition in my view!

From my limited knowledge on such things - yes the Panasonic does record onto discs as well as having a hard drive.
The drawback I found with Panasonic recorders is that altough they are probably the better machines (ie. built in hard drive) they only use DVDR- format discs whereas the Philips I went for uses DVDR+ discs.
DVDR- means you can only play back recorded material on the same model whereas the Philips which uses the + format you can play the recordings back on any DVD player just as you would any other DVD

Hmm. My ex flatmate bought a Minidisc deck a couple of years ago from a crap hi street chain and within the first year he had to take it back twice. Basically, get in touch with whoever sold it to you, and get them to re-start the warranty not from the date of purchase, but from the point when you got it repaired / exchanged. That's what my mate did, after a bit of arguing.

These things usually come with the option of 3 or 5 year extensions, so go for the cheapest, shortest period possible, cos the chances are you'll be after a new one with more features in a couple of years. And always see if the manufacturer offers warranty extensions directly, as these will be cheaper than the poop that Dixons try and flog you.

Or you could go down the bookies and see what odds they give you on your DVD player breaking in the next year. It's the best form of insurance, you know it makes sense. They'll probably tell you to piss off, though.
