Charlie's Bar, just off Stroget (pedestrianised shopping street) is good if you get homesick, they do several Harveys beers on draught and are famously the only pub outside a 50 mile radius of Lewes that Harveys supply.

Harveys in Copenhagen? I never knew that!

Odense, a reasonable sized town by Danmark's standards but not as big as say, Århus - prices were like this circa 2005 when I left;

Pint of Tuborg or 'Odense Classic' in a cafe/bar - 40-47kr generally (around a fiver - maybe slightly less)

Nightclubs nearly always have drinks offers which makes nightclubs actually cheaper places to drink than bars - usually it's a 'drink as much beer as you can between 10pm-12am for 100kr' or something like that.

In KBH, generally add another 10-20kr per drink and take away the drinks offers

Was there in September. The not in the country it's capital of bit is wrong, Denmark is made up of lots of different islands as are many countries in the world. You could argue that Stockholm (set on 17 islands) or Venice (in the sea) aren't in Sweden or Italy if the "linked by bridges" rule applies. Copenhagen is expensive for hotels, but very reasonable for beer for Scandinavia. I was paying £9 a pint in Malmo (Sweden) on the same holiday, but 'only' £6 or so in Copenagen.

Don't bother going to see the Little Mermaid, it isn't there. They sent it to Shanghai (World Expo) to try and drum up business for Danish companies from China. Yes, they sent the actual thing! Most other countries would have sent a replica. It's due back sometime in December, I believe.

The Ny Carlsberg Glypotek is an ace art museum, Christiania is full of nutters and spliffs (imagine The Level if it was surrounded by canals), and the Carlsberg Brewery Tour is excellent, with two free beers at the end (don't worry, they do loads of different beers, porters, bitters, etc rather than just the piss-tasting lager they send over here).

Pub recommendations: Nørrebro Bryghus, North of the centre, is an aces brewpub. CUBE (cocktail bar on the ground floor of Scandic Webers hotel near the station) is brilliant as it looks out onto the crossroads where all the prostitutes try to pick up punters, ie great for people-watching. Charlie's Bar, just off Stroget (pedestrianised shopping street) is good if you get homesick, they do several Harveys beers on draught and are famously the only pub outside a 50 mile radius of Lewes that Harveys supply. They also do (Porterhouse) Wrasslers XXX, the world's bestest stout, on draught.

+1 for Cube but it gets very busy very early and don't forget your credit cards. You'll only go once

I was looking forward to going earlier in the year Was working for a Danish bank in London, when they decided to move their development effort to Copenhagen, and were willing to pay me £1000 a day to go there for maybe a year. Couldn't really do it, but it looked like a nice place.

Just out of interest; why couldn't you do it? Sounds like a very good deal!

It got a bit complicated, really. I didn't want to move there, so was trying to wangle it so I could do 5 days worth of hours in 4 days, and fly back at weekends. I.e. fly out on a Sun eve, do 10 hours for 4 days Mon to Thurs (not a problem when you're working away from home), then fly back thurs eve or Fri morning.

I think with the medication I'm on, it would have got very tiring for me, and I didn't want to leave my 2 cats. That's about it. I could have done it at a push, then I got a new job in London while I was considering it. If I was a little younger, I would have gone though.

Shouldn't take the Mrs, the clacker is Premier League!

I know someone mentioned the Carlsberg Brewery, I did the Tuborg tour & it was quality; came staggering out of there!

Great atmosphere in all the bars around the main square with people from all over the place. I love the Swedes who come over from Malmo at the weekend on the lash; mental.

I lived in Odense and regularly visited København, agree with this person's comments also Noma is superb. And take in a Jensen's bøfhus - the finest commercial steak house chain in the world. Their whiskey sauce is to DIE for

i remember discovering jensens boefhus in horsens many years ago and talking about it all the time and how great it was. it didnt take me a lot of travelling around denmark to realise it was the equivalent of visiting the UK and waxing lyrical about berni inns. i felt silly. except obviously they are still excellent.

The seaside.
Following on from the mention of drunk Swedes, I can recommend Helsingor if you have time. It's a 40 min train journey from central Copenhagen, but has Hamlet's castle and the cheapest bars in Denmark. Swedes come over on the ferry to get bladdered so all the bars compete for their custom with drink offers. I paid about 2 quid for a bottle of beer there and had another three for free off of pissed Swedes buying rounds for the whole pub. Mental.

Hence saying it is the finest commercial steakhouse.. it's like TGI Fridays but a million times better..

Hi guys - just wanted to say thanks for the words of advice. Me and the missus had a brilliant time. We went to Tivoli, the national museum and around the castles on the island.

Am a smorrebrod(sp) fan now after visiting a place in Helsingor... Agree about Jensens Bofhus aswell...Their salad bar and steaks were UNBELIEVABLE.

Drink was expensive although that didn't stop me from sampling the Tuborg Christmas beer!!!

Thanks again

Well worth taking a boat trip too, where you get a good view of the little mermaid which is, well very little.

Was there in June but the Little mermaid wasn't:ohmy:. It has been in the Far East all year at an exhibition which I believe still has another 6 weeks to go.

The Shanghai Expo closed a few weeks ago. As it happens, she's going back on her rock tomorrow: Heavy Lift - News

But as people have mentioned she's an overrated waste of (not very much) space.

A bit like the Mannekin Pis in Brussels in that respect, but at least once you are disillusioned with him there is one of Europe's best pubs (the Poechenellekelder) to slip into, literally 5 metres away...

On the subject of the FANTASTIC Tuborg Christmas Brew - it is exclusive to Wetherspoon's pubs for the next 10 weeks (started 22nd November) - epic, EPIC win! First time the 5.6% ale has been available outside of Scandinavia..
