Nurburgring piece

Anyone else ever gone round the old Nurburgring? Did it last week, absolutely mental, although, with a long way home still, I took it at a pretty sedate pace - unlike these "Ring Taxis", souped-up BMWs taking punter on insanely hair-raising trips, driven by frankly mentalist professional drivers - I briefly spotted one in my rear mirror (it appeared to be skidding sideways exiting from a corner) before it hit warp speed again and thrust out ahead of me. Every lead head in western Europe gathers there and for 19 Euros a pop for 20kms of Niki Lauda-burning "green hell" (as Jackie Stewart called it), I'd recommend it.

Not really into cars or driving but I do like going fast and taking corners at silly speeds.

Great picture MoH, and brings back very happy memories since I've driven the Nurburgring too. It was tremendous fun, especially the Karussell which scared the shite out of everyone else in the car!!! Just wish I'd had a better car to drive round the circuit in rather than the borrowed Cavalier I used.

It is a great pic so due credit to my nephew who took it, he was on photographic duties while his uncle tried not to soil himself whilst cackling with laughter at the sheer lunacy of the setting and driving like some timid granny, at least compared to all the nutters in M3s, AMGs etc etc.

As for the karusell, I did wonder what was going on when I saw two cars dip down into that weird rollerball-style contraption; I was too scared that my exhaust would fall off to join them.

I don't know if that's the one or not but about 20 years ago I drove back from the Mosel area and I'm sure I was on a grand prix circuit at one stage.

It was compulsory to do a murray walker impression whilst driving.

The Spa-Francochamps circuit is partly on public roads and great fun.

Yup - most of the circuit used to be public roads down to Malmedy, now not so much of it is...and they've rebuilt the entire bus stop, La Source and F1 garages this winter, hoping to be finished shortly!

Le Mans is about 90% public roads after the race finishes... although I don't think Rool would have been that far south...

That's the one rool, it's not far from the Mosel. The drive to get there is impressive enough.

They were using the grand prix track there for some unseen vehicles that were making a deafeningly ungodly, petrifying, gut-wrenching racket near to where you buy the tickets...not what you need to hear.

American Le Mans series races the Nordschleiffe - they are bloody loud, how the Americans build their v8's and v10's so loud when the Europeans make then faster and quieter is beyond me...

Maybe it was that one, I would have driven out of Germany and then through Luxembourg and Belgium

Unashamed bounce just to wallow in the great memories of this visit, prompted by this weekend's events on the little WUSS grand prix circuit rather than the legendary old North Loop. Dammit I fancy going again.

Could have been Rouen or Reims (pic attached) en Francais, or Chimay in Belgium.

I went round in my very humble car of the time. Bikes on that...my god, that's proper MAD. I read somewhere that the most common object found on people that have crashed on Nurburgring (apart from soiled undergarments) is a ticking stopwatch...

When I drove the Nurburgring, 3 of my passengers were racing drivers and as we swooped down and out of the Karusell, one of them observed that he'd never, ever, seen as good a crowd at your average (proper) meeting!
