This is really bad news. I have friends in Jamaica and they're worried sick.

The worst part is that if they flee to a safer part of the island than Kingston they risk their homes being almost certainly looted as well as potentially destroyed.

I know our wet August was a bit shit but we really have got to be grateful when something like this puts it into perspective.

In fact we're incredibly lucky. Not only are we safe from tropical storms but we've no volcanoes, seismic faults or twisters to worry about.

** POINTLESS QUESTION ALERT **

So is that storm spinning clockwise or anti-clockwise ?
I guess this would be dictated by the direction the Earth spins on its axis, or something.

First one who can provide me with a convincing argument one way or the other will win a slightly bent paperclip which I sucked on yesterday.

Yes, yes, but which way is the storm itself spinning, within itself. Is it drawing into the eye, or spitting out ?

When I was in Runaway Bay on the North Coast of Jamaica a couple of years back, there was still the wreckage of an entire hotel flattened by the last major hurricane. Looked like a bomb had hit it. The houses in the village are flimsy to say the least. The big ones are timber-framed, the less big ones just breeze-blocks and corrugated iron roofs. In the countryside it's shacks. They'll be flattened.

Hoping for the best but fearing the worst.

Now you see, that's a saying I've never quite understood.

Bombs don't tend to hits things, preferring instead to go off inside things. Therefore, how can the damage from a hurricane be comparable to that caused by a bomb?

Hmmm.. can I get back to you on that one. I'll have MY people call YOUR people :glare:
