Its not always the case, but yes, when they start to think too hard about the technical skills, they often lose something.
Depends on the genre of music. This ruling doesn't work for classical music.

Mine's arrived! Too busy to review this week.
This is a great review, and I listened back to each track as i read what you'd said about it. Interesting to get someone esle's perspective on stuff you like, and some of the references you name are things I'd never have thought of (through not coming new to those bands).
I'd never see anything of the Smiths or The Cure in the Field Mice, because in my head the Field Mice are The Field Mice, full stop - but now you've said it, I see it in the guitar work.
The Red Sleeping Beauty track is another case in point. To me it is PURE St.Etienne, if you need to pin a refernce on it, but for the intro at least I can very much see your Lightning Seeds comment.
The Bjork track was a bit of a risk. Off kilter Jazz, with an Icelandic vocal isn't everyone's cup of tea... I love it, and the whole album its taken from. If anything, the fact you can't actually listen to the meaning of the lyrics, means you can sit back and apreciate her voice just for the instrument that it is.
The bands you've mentioned following up are good choices. Veronica Falls are superb and that track is very much in line with the rest of their stuff. Codeine Velvet Club was some kind of side project I think, and only amounted to the one album. I've [MENTION=5200]Buzzer[/MENTION] to thank for putting me onto it. It's epic. Packed with drama, and story-telling.
My favourite band of those included, are The School. Simply fabulous. I'm a bit in love with the singer / songwriter Liz Hunt. I couldn't recommend a band more highly.
Pleased it went down so well, and hope your other half enjoyed it more than the fake list!

Nice looking / sounding compilation, and some of those songs look very familiar
I think that tonight, as the better half is out, Indiepop Vol II will start taking shape.Still no sign of a CD for me from my Bunny - I've given up waiting. I didn't get one at Christmas either.

Right - got my review finally (apologies for lateness)
Got my CD last week, it has a nice cover of a bloke harpooning a shark, inside was a comic strip of roy of the rovers. as many of the songs seem to be from the 70s, i can only assume the comics are from the 70s too, maybe its a hint to the sender? (sorry i have no idea, im only in my 20s)
1: Alice Coltrane - Journey In Satchidananda - kind of trippy 70s music. kinda cool in a way, its a wall of sound - i'd never listen to this normally but i enjoyed it
2: Uilab - St Elmo's Fire - hard to explain this one - similar style to Beck but with both male & female vocals. didnt love it but not a bad song
3: Brian Eno - Everything Merges With The Night - really didnt like this one - sorry
4: Nicodemus - Dog Better Than Gun - this was cool - i liked this, didnt take long to be singing along to the lyrics, plus i like dogs, which helps
5: Hood - You Show No Emotion At All - reminds me a bit of Hot Chip or Chromeo, but not as good - bit dull
6: My Bloody Valentine - Soon (Andrew Weatherall Mix) - hard to explain this one as i dont know the original song, but it was OK. kind of 90s sounding danceish remix. i went back and listened to the original, which i prefer
7: Loop - Sunburst - didnt like this one sorry - didnt feel there was really anything to it and it was a bit depressing
8: Can - Mother Sky - not bad - kind of psychedelic sounds going on there, but not really to my tastes
9: The B-52s - Give Me Back My Man - quite liked this one - liked the vocals - decent song
10: The 3 Johns - Never And Always - I liked this one - i dont know why, not the kind of genre i normally like, but it was good
11: The Soft Boys - Only The Stones Remain - liked this song - good guitar riffs - didnt love the vocals, but the rest of it was good enough to negate the fact
all in all - most of it isnt stuff i would listen to again unfortunately - its just not the style of music i like - however, there were a few songs in there that i did quite enjoy, but not enough for me to go and look through their back catalogue
thanks to the send for taking the time to make the cd and give me a sample of their tastes, i appreciate it, and hopefully other members will be able to have a quick listen via the youtube links i left
as for who my poster is - i have no idea, ill check at who is left and then edit this with a guess

01. Goldfrapp – Drew
All I ask for in a song (as those on the C86 thread are well aware) is a breathy female vocal, a nice melody and some jangly guitars. This has it all* and is a quite lovely way to open.
*except the jangly guitars
02. Pink Floyd – Vera
This is pretty engaging. Then it abruptly stops. That’s it really.
03. Pyramid – Sleeping Fox
This is like a five minute intro to a potentially good extra track, that New Order didn’t quite get round to adding to Republic. Its perfectly well done, but this kind of electronica is just background music for me.
04. East of Ely – Easy Friend
New to me, these Australian (I looked them up) Indie types have knocked out a pretty decent tune. Worth investigation. Like this.
05. Bombay Bicycle Club – Carry me
I enjoyed this –nice tempo. However, it says all it has to say in 2 mins, but carries on for 4 and a half. I feel like I accidentally put it on repeat.
06. The Trouble with Templeton – Breeders
This is a real highlight of the CD, and another Australian Indie band that I shall be investigating more closely. I love the understated guitar work on this tuneful, folksy track, and the singer conveys genuine emotion. Like this a lot.
07. Supergrass – Prophet 15
In my mind Supergrass were at their best doing their uptempo ‘cartoon pop’, but this is decent enough.
08. Haim –
I’ve seen Haim CDs in HMV and that, but never heard them. This reminded me, in parts, of Hanson, and in parts, of Huey Lewis and the News. Um. That’s not ideal.
09. Ocean Colour Scene –Big star
OCS are logged in a vey specific time and place, in my mind, and I almost consciously find their stuff dated. This is a nicely crafted track, performed with obvious skill, that probably deserves to be liked more than I do.
10. The Music – Getaway
Bit MOR for me, and I didn’t like his reedy vocal. Sorry
11. The Beatles – Her Majesty
Another band that are new to me. From Liverpool apparently…
(It’s an 18 second doodle. It made me smile actually)
12. Blaudzun – We both know
Really like this, and another artist completely new to me. I liked the gentle, emotive tune it started out as, then halfway through, it builds to something else – something a bit Arcade Fire. Terrific. Reading up on them (‘him’ actually, as it turns out) wiki offers that ‘he worked on a special collection of songs, intended to be the soundtrack to a midnight car drive’. About right.
13. Stereophonics – Too many sandwiches
I like Kelly Jones. I like his songwriting – that he writes about real stuff. I don’t really like this though. I think his delivery sounds forced – much better on their more downbeat tracks – size 9s, Handbags, etc.
14. The Beatles – Your mother should know
My Mum would indeed know (although truth be told she was more a Stones girl). Finely crafted. Nice melody. Never been an enormous fan, be you cant fault them really, can you?
15. Hugh Laurie – Battle of Jericho
Well, this is an interesting inclusion. I’d read various wanky reviews about his material in the Sunday Times magazine or somewhere, and it piqued my interest, but hadn’t heard any of it. I really value the quality of ‘story-telling’ in a vocalist – that ability to convey drama in their delivery. Laurie has this in spades. This is a slightly mental comparison, but he put me in mind of Nick Cave (which is high praise).
Overall this is an engaging mix, with a couple of real gems, which will warrant further investigation. Which, is the whole POINT, so bravo

I've got your address so will send you a copy of the CD I did for Easter. The person who got it never did a review and I would hate for my efforts to be wasted! Wil stick it in the post at the weekend- it won't have the same artwork as I accidentally deleted that but the songs remain the same.
