Referred to our thread on here that breaks down our performance under Potter. Apparently we conceded very few chances to the opposition but we have one of the worst records for conceding when the opposition do have a chance. Which explains the introduction of Sanchez. Also that we are....unlucky. One pundit suggested we need to hoof it more Better comment - we lack a cutting edge; missing Muzza....need devilment at the front that can cause chaos for defences....in other words....we need a decent striker.

I kind of understand where Waddle gets the impression from. I think that our conversion rate is low because we take too long in trying to find the opportunity and often end up shooting in crowded spaces as a result.

My original post was made in annoyance of lazy punditry that doesn't research, but instead relies on fallacious received wisdom and the subjective impression of the viewer. I would hazard a guess that a lot of ex pro pundits think that their job lasts for the length of time that they are on air and that many do little reading or research during the rest of the week. Its a view I first formed when listening to the likes of David Pleat and Trevor Francis continuing to mispronounce overseas players' names game after game, year after year. How much effort does it take to learn how to pronounce someone's name? The answer is slightly more effort than many well paid football pundits are willing to put into their jobs.

Michael Lewis in 'Moneyball' describes really well how the insider culture in sport can lead to false assumptions and hive mind opinion forming. He's talking about scouting, but its far worse in pundits, most of whom are never put in the position of having their lazy opinions tested.

Not much reminds me of Withdean these days, but this ploy reminds me of Micky Adams second spell when he would put Adam Virgo on the left wing. Specifically, I remember a home game against Cheltenham who were playing with a small left back and so it became our only tactic of the game: hump it to Virgo on the right wing and play for second balls from his knock downs.

Pretty sure we lost.

I do think the odd fast punt upfield into space beyond the centrebacks (channels between full/centrebacks) would help give us variation - Maupay/ Connolly running into the space rather than too a classic Murray frontman type backing into the centrebacks. Especially as in white and dunk we have centrebacks capable of placing 50m passes

Firstly, Ryan doesn't throw it out every time, in fact very rarely. Secondly, Sanchez does hoof it forward to our very short front line. Not everytime but every now and again, particularly when the ball has been played back to him.

That's right - I thought Waddle was shocking. At one point, he said you can make any point with statistics. However, in my view, he doesn't like our approach and lets his personal preference colour his analysis. The analysis indicated that we have (over the course of the season) had issues at both ends of the pitch. I think we can see this - we have lost leads a lot and I think we would all think that Dunk has been less good over the course of this season that for several years. I feel there are fewer goalkeeping errors with Sanchez and Ryan similarly had fallen from previously hgher standards for whatever reasons. Last year, it felt like we had covered the absence of Murray (who was himself less effective with each passing year). Maupay has had a frustrating year (and the other Connolly has also lacked confidence I think). I think on balance I'm optimistic though about our prospects from here - and I'm convinced that there will be lots of good analysis happening by GP and team - a damn site more rigorous than Chris Waddle anyway.
