In your yoof you do things that only years later, you truly appreciate. In the late 70s I became friends with a NS fanatic in our small village and got into it, culminating in 1980, wearing my fave flares (complete with a half dozen false pocket flaps) and travelling a few hundred miles to an all-nighter at Wigan Casino. At the time I didn't realise the significance of going tbh and it closed down about a year later from memory.

One of those things that stay with you long after.

Aside from that, thanks for posting the link, excellent stuff.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, the guy in the brown suit has hopefully given his singing career a massive boost from that appearance 😎.

I felt particularly old when they covered R Dean Taylor's " There's a Ghost in My House "... still have the single in the attic from times gentler and sadly distant.

You can watch the Prom back on iPLayer - it was terrific !

There's more music / performances on BBC Sounds ( a couple of tracks were edited out of the tv performance but are in full on Sounds)

6 Music has a 15 hour Northern Soul "all nighter" including a repeat of the Prom, special shows, new live performances, playlists and archive on September 9th.

A reminder that 6 Music's Northern Soul all nighter is this weekend Saturday/Sunday night. 9th and 10th September >>
Here's the full details of what's promised (will all be available on BBC Sounds for the month after)

BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of Wigan Casino with a Northern Soul All-Nighter

As the 50th anniversary of legendary Northern Soul venue Wigan Casino approaches, BBC Radio 6 Music celebrates on Saturday 9th September, with a night of programming dedicated to Northern Soul.

Broadcasting from 6pm on Saturday 9th September – 8am on Sunday 10th September, highlights include a special Northern Soul edition of The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show and a broadcast of Stuart Maconie’s Northern Soul Prom, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in July.

6-9pm

Craig’s Northern Soul special of Funk and Soul kicks off the all-nighter. The show will feature a ten-piece soul house band – The Signatures – and special guests including Wigan Casino legend, Richard Searling and all-female R&B group, The Flirtations. Craig will also be going in search of the rarest Northern Soul record, recently sold for £100k.

9pm-12am

Stuart Maconie joins the party, as he and Craig introduce a broadcast of the Northern Soul Prom, created by Stuart and recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

The prom sees talented singers including Brendan Reilly, Darrell Smith, Frida Mariama Touray, Natalie Palmer, Nick Shirm and Vula Malinga perform classic Northern Soul tracks such as You’re Gonna Make Me Love You, Open the Door to Your Heart, It Really Hurts Me Girl, Hold Back The Night and more - all accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

12am-4am

We embark on an audio tour of the UK’s iconic all-nighter venues, with hour-long playlists by DJs who were there at Golden Torch (12am-1am), Wigan Casino (1am-2am), Twisted Wheel (2am-3am) and 100 Club (3am-4am). These key figures from the scene share stories and songs, taking listeners back to the dance floors of these legendary spaces.

From 4am-7am, 6 Music’s Morning After Mix, brings listeners a playlist of mellow soul numbers, featuring classic ballads and as well as contemporary selections.

Stuart and Craig return to the airwaves at 7am on Sunday morning (10th September) to present Lights On with Stuart and Craig. They’ll bring the party to a close including the original versions of Wigan Casino’s famous Three Before Eight – Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe and I’m On My Way by Dean Parrish to round off the night....
