Conspiracy theorist Norman Baker is new Home Office minister. This is bonkers

By Dan Hodges Politics Last updated: October 7th, 2013

One thing that’s been overlooked a little is that this isn’t just reshuffle day for David Cameron and Ed Miliband, but also for Nick Clegg. And he’s just made an bizarre appointment.

Jeremy Browne – a very nice and able Minister – has been sacked and replaced at the Home Office by Norman Baker. Norman Baker may also be a very nice man. But he’s also a conspiracy theorist. Literally.

In 2007 he wrote The Strange Death of Dr David Kelly, in which he asserts that the former MOD weapons inspector was murdered.

In his book he examines the possibility that US and British agents murdered Kelly, before coming to the conclusion it was probably done by an Iraqi hit team, then covered up by the government.

I’ve never read Baker’s book, and can’t comment on the veracity of his claims. Except to say they’re clearly bonkers.

How is it possible that a man who believes the British security services were either directly involved in murdering – or covering up the murder of – David Kelly now be a Minister at the Home Office with the sensitive security responsibilities that entails? Come to that, if Baker thinks mysterious hit squads and cover-up teams are on the loose, how is he going to feel working late at night in the bowels of the Home Office?

It’s a ludicrous appointment. What does Nick Clegg think he's doing?

It is indeed bonkers and I don't think Teresa May is best pleased either.

Why should a porn star be bothered about Norman Baker? Do you know something we don't? (or did you mean Theresa May?)

One piece of total joy in this................the MP who lost this job and who turned my vote into a Tory vote having promised to keep the Tories out was the dissembler from Taunton Jeremy "I love QPR " Browne. He'll be losing his seat at the next election as well, so no doubt he'll be planning for some well paid sinecure beyond that.

It's not ludicrous at all if you are Clegg.

Love him or loathe Baker he is definitely one of the more combative Lib Dem MPs and he will create quite a different atmosphere in the home office with Teresa May. His mandate from Clegg will no doubt be to stretch the policy differences between Tory and Lib Dem in this key portfolio in the build up to the elections. No doubt there will be a more fractious relationship, and some important policy decisions will grind to a halt.

Politically it is therefore completely logical.

The electorate should reflect on this kind of childless, because if they want leadership making sound policy decisions based on the interests of UK citizens then they won't get them from our politicians in our kind of democracy.

Don't agree with him on Falmer but he is a good local MP for Lewes and surrounding area, would much rather keep him than some idiot with a blue rosette.
