Seeing a few people going on about Doug Loft and I was wracking my brains trying to remember any players we've signed from a Non Leagie club who've proved to be any use. I've been watching this club since 1969 and I can remember Graham Pearce for a start. Didn't Robert Codner come from Non league ? Also, Mark Gall (were Maidstone in the League when we signed him ?) and then Nicky (Can't remember his surname) we signed from Barnet when they were non league. Maybe Nathan Elder should have been given a bit more of a chance and I know that we've had people like Steve Penny who we got from an Irish club who did well.

The thing is though who else have we signed from Non League has proved to be any good ? Doug Loft has never really done that much and I still cannot understand why we signed Johnny Dixon.

Can anybody remember any other good non league signings ?

Nicky Bissett and Robert Codner were both from Barnet I think and both pretty useful, although Bissett never really recovered form a broken leg.

Bissett and Codner cost us £230,000 for the pair.

Which at the time was mega money for a non league player. It would be the equivilient of paying £1million for a couple of players from Crawley these days. Still the were both pretty good signings though Codner went off the radar from time to time and Bissett suffered a very bad leg break. At the time he broke his leg he was on the verge of a big money move to Ipswich Town which would have made the club some serious profit.

I believe that was a record for non league players at the time.... Barry Fry must've thought he'd won the lottery!

If we'd HAD a lottery back then of course - which we didn't... type stuff....
