We've played Boxing Day games at Withdean in the past. Brighton Buses provided park & ride services on those occasions. Why can't OR aren't they providing them this coming Boxing Day? Maybe Brighton & Hove Buses might care to explain why they are not providing a P & R service that day, if that is the case?

Although The Amex is unique in its large reliance on Public Transport, when it comes to Boxing Day games, are we really in such a different situation to most other clubs in the Country? Public Transport shuts down for two days over Christmas with the exception of a scant skeleton service in the London area. Last year at Reading Both home and away supporters had to get there without public transport. Chartered coaches are usually the only alternative to cars for Boxing Day fixtures.

The car parking facilities at The Amex are limited. Are there other car parks in the area that could be utilised that day? Brighton University? Stanmer Park? Falmer School?

What about chartering private coaches to serve the Park and rides? If there's logistical issue's in hiring enough coaches on Boxing Day, maybe just use the largest park and ride. (Racecourse?)

Trouble is there was only 6/7000 trying to get to Withdean using the P & R's etc this year we are up to 26/27000 and that is a lot of people to be moving without trains and scheduled bus services let alone a reduced P & R. Has anyone actually emailed Paul Barber and asked him the exact situation instead of speculating on here ?

There is still 86 days to go which is plenty of time to get in some much needed training for either cycling or walking to the amex on boxing day. I shall be using 20 mins per mile as a guide but looking to better this. For 3pm kick off will leave home at 11. It will also provide a vision of the city when the greens ban all transport

Re: P&R Boxing Day?

Almost certainly no trains. I will be amazed if it goes ahead on that day. Will be carnage trying to get there and back.

Still cant see this going ahead and the club is taking too long to confirm either travel arrangements for it or whether it will be moved. 80% of people getting to the Amex use "sustainable travel" which includes trains, coaches, P&R and matchday buses - the only one of those which now has a vague chance of running is the coaches. I dont think many other stadia in the country is like this - which means we do have a problem. I agree with the above post suggesting why these werent switched, as there is transport in London on Boxing Day and limited trains between London - Brighton.

If it means only 20% or so can get to the Amex, your looking at a capacity of around 6,000 if it went ahead. Trains/Buses would only run if everyone paid a stupidly high amount on top of the fee we already pay.

To those saying it shouldnt be moved and that this never happened at Withdean, we didnt have 23,000 STHs at Withdean and such a heavy reliability on public transport.

There are 'walking trains' planned from The Level, Devils Dyke and Brighton Marina.

Which doesnt help anyone who doesnt live in the Brighton area or who cant walk long distances - that and its December so it wouldnt be the nicest conditions to walk in.

P&R Boxing Day?

Fairly sure that in the old days of 30,000+ crowds at the Goldstone that there were no buses and trains on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day when matches were played and yet they still went ahead.:drama:

How can you compare the two scenarios?

Everyone used to drive and park around the goldstone. It's virtually impossible to do that now.

P&R Boxing Day?

Too much fuss, play it as scheduled, like Palace away sat @ 3, if you can't find a workaround in 3 months you deserve to miss the game

But we did have 28,353 on Boxing Day against Palace in 1979 - a match I remember very well, having walked to the Goldstone from Moulsecoomb. And we had gates above 20,000 in the 50s when very few people had cars.

We'd be a laughing stock if we asked the FL to rearrange this fixture. There's little or no public transport anywhere in the country, would we really want to be the only club that says we can't deal with it? And we'd certainly be a laughing stock going to the League now and saying we've only just noticed the Millwall match is at Christmas - four months after the fixtures came out. Clubs can request no home games for certain dates - as we do for Pride and 5 November - so if it really was a problem, we'd have requested it.

Besides, it's not true to say there are no buses running. The 49s are running (they'll take you within 15 mins of the ground) and the 28s are running - and they stop outside.

Of course, I'm being selfish as my Millwall-supporting in-laws will be coming down and I'll have no recriminations for going to the match with them.

When it comes to transport issues, you're comparing apples and oranges. Three times as many people use public transport to get to the stadium than anyone else's.

And the club and police went to the League at the beginning of the season about this. I'm told that the FL are digging thier heels in, and insisting that the game goes ahead. I suspect - though don't know - that the police might have another say in this.

The Fatboy gigs managed to go ahead with no trains. I'm sure the club and supporters can figure out a work around for this game. It's not beyond the wit of man.

One bus an hour on route 28 and two buses an hour on route 49 will hardly be adequate. Nothing is planned for route 25. And the last bus back towards Brighton is at 6.25pm from East Moulsecoomb.

Well, as I said, people managed in the 50s, 60s and 70s when private car ownership was much lower.

I don't think the FL would take kindly to a police request at this stage. This would have been flagged four months ago if this were an issue.

Quite. I've been to pretty much every home Boxing Game since the early 70s (and several away ones too). There's been minimal public transport on those days and I don't drive. I see no reason for lack of buses to be a problem.

The OP said there would not be any buses - that's not the case
