Intead we will be charged by the mile using a satellite!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3908627.stm

Is it just me or will this dead horse cost the tax payer billions to implement and will do sod all?

Is it just me or whould it be far simpler to abolish road tax and simply put up duty on Petrol? People who use the road more pay more. Simple and it would actually SAVE money on administration of road tax disks. Or is this too obviouss, cheap, popular and simple?

Yeah you're right, lets build a satellite, send it to space program loads of computers install loads of hi tech tracker devises to watch us as we drive so we can have a fairer system. How long will it take to get the money back 'invested' in this hair brained scheme?

What Kudos could an MP take from scrapping road tax and
putting it on fuel?

It's too easy, could be done without any new infastructure and would not invlove any work on their part whatsoever.

Answer, none, so they won't do it. They don't care about anyone but themselves and how they will look.

Road tax could be abolished and replaced by an increase in fuel duty. We had a thread about this recently.

Road tax costs about £200m per year to administer but raises £4billion in duty. Fuel tax raises about £16billion. So to replace Road tax would need a 25% increase in fuel tax. I think that means about 15p per litre. Maybe a bit more if you think that higher pump prices mean lower car usage.

I think you would still need a road tax system to support the database of registered car owners. That would mean a road tax of about £10.

This way users are directly charged for their use of roads.

I can't see a satellite system working simply because it would involve chipping every car in the country, which would be an enormous cost. Of course, nobody would tamper with the chips, or just not bother to get one now, would they?

Putting all the tax on fuel is the simplest and fairest and easiest way to do it. No super computers or satelites required.

1. The more miles you drive the more tax you pay.

2. Those with big engined high polluting cars pay more tax.

Maybe allow bus, coach and train companies to pay a lower rate of tax on the fuel they use encouraging people to use public transport.

Instead of having a tax disk in your car you should display an insurance disk and an MOT disk to prove the car is road legal.

I fully agree with your post. I am a taxi driver and whilst the increase in fuel would cost me more I am sure it would stop certain people from driving their cars at certain times. i.e. 4 Wheel drive on the school run?

I don't like the idea of satellite tracking either - but the main point behind the congestion charge in London (and if it is introduced, elsewhere) is to discourage the use of private vehicles in busy urban areas. A higher petrol tax by itself would not achieve that - and would discriminate against rural car users who have no alternative to using the car.

I can see what you are getting at - but trying to reduce congestion seems to be the main issue on politicians' minds.

This would be different to an extra fuel tax, because they will be able to control congestion much more effectively. They can charge higher prices for the busiest roads in busiest periods to try to get people to use different types of transport or car share.

I don't much like the idea of being monitored by satellites all the time, but eventually someone's got to do something about the increase in car use and all its damage to the environment.

If they promise to put the money into public transport, that would help sugar the pill!!!

The way to solve congestion is not to charge more for peope to use their cars. The way to solve congestion is to offer a viable alternative. In most cases this is not the case at all.

Getting rid of road tax and putting it on fuel is easily the fairest way of doing it. Of in any system there will be losers. However, at the moment the average joe on the street is the loser. I have a 15min drive to work. I do about 7,000 miles a year. Why am I paying the same tax as a sales rep?

If you live in the country that is your choice at the end of the day. Tractors etc don't pay duty on fuel already so the idea that all farmers are hard up is a load of crap. I've never met a poor Farmer and I've never met a happy one either!

Using Satellites to reduce congestion is crap. Is smacks heavily of big brother and I won't stand for it. Abolishing road tax and whacking it on fuel is a fair system. Providing viable alturnatives and offering tax consessions to businesses encouraging staff to work from home will help congestion. Also does anyone suffer from congestion when the schools break up?

Why not change the school hours so they on't clash with the rush hour? THis will cause jip for parents that work however, so here's a radical thought. Let the buggers walk/cycle to school! This will help tackle to fat kid issue too!

We don't need to spend lots of money to make this coutry work. We just need honest MPs with a genuine desire to make the coutry better rather than just come up with hair brained schemes to get votes.
