[Albion] No red card?

Aware that there is a separate thread on the refs performance, but i am quite confused as to why our penalty wasn’t also a red card for the brentford defender.

thought blocking a goal bound shot with arms was a straight red card?? at least it was at old trafford the other week. or was the brentford keeper being behind the defender the factor which saved them from going down to 10 men?

Exactly. Not a lot of difference between Willians save and the one today.

Except the opponents. Hate to use big club bias, but things like this and Fernandez shove on the lino vs Mitrovic's 10 game ban do not help the cause of it being a level playing field.

Double-jeopardy law in place for a couple of seasons. Not a red unless last man and opponent through on goal and/or denying a clear goal. Willian pushed it off the line (would have been a goal) but today was in the 6-yard box with another defender and the keeper around him.
right but i thought that applied to defenders playing the ball in tackle? seem to recall murray being sent off vs sheff weds for something similar, and that was the season the double jeopardy rule was introduced as in the 3-0 vs rotherham that season we got a penalty that would’ve been a penalty and red card in previous seasons. just a bit confusing

Do you think that other defender could have got a challenge in before Buonanotte managed to get a shot away? To me that seems unlikely, given that he'd already got his shot away.

Unfortunately it's not a level playing field. Why would you hate to bring up the obvious - English football is totally and utterly dominated by the so-called big six clubs and the whole system is there to preserve and sustain them? It's reflected in refereeing decisions, VAR and the media. You only have to have a look at other football codes to see how poorly and unreasonably managed this otherwise great football competition is.

Guessing the rules!

Great example. Had that not have hit Murray's hands, it would have hit his face, so it wasn't going in anyway - yet that was a red.
Pretty sure it was also going over.

Oliver definitely paused at the monitor. He saw the first replay and was about to leave the monitor then looks back to check - thinking about it I wonder if that was the moment he thought to check whether yellow or red card?

Stops a goal for me. If you were setting up a referees training session how would you define the clear difference between red for Willian and yellow yesterday?

Having gone and read the double jeopardy law (which has a broader usage than I thought), it looks as though the crucial difference in this case is Oliver thinking Hickey has attempted to play the ball (with his head or through legal means), even if the outcome of denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity with his hand is the same.

Don’t agree with it of course, but that appears to be his rationale for only giving a yellow.

It was Undav's shot, but the keeper was behind the ball and *might* have saved it. Either that or he's seen Undav before.

With the Murray one, I remember it was going in and there was nobody behind him.

The bigger issue, for me, I the one that wasn't given as Oliver clearly signalled he had his hands down by his sides...when he clearly didn't.

Highly debatable as to whether the Murray one was going in, and Stockdake was behind him. If that was a red, then yesterday’s should have been as well.

Here’s the link at about 8 mins for the Murray incident, but worth watching the entire video just because it’s marvellous:

A shot going on target saved by a handball should be a red, double jeopardy is nonsense.

Rules are wrong, if that isn’t the case, he knew what he’d done he was down acting dazed for a few seconds before he inevitably realised that play acting doesn’t work anymore.

More to the point, how Oliver didn’t see that I have no idea.

Can I ask about our corner taking on the subject of rules.
Ball is placed in the corner with the usual 1mm just over the line and a second player is stood over the goal line and off the pitch which, in therory, is in front of the ball. The ball is knocked back a yard and the second player enters the pitch in what would be an offside position and kicks it into the centre. Whilst it must be legal, why?

Can’t be offside from a goal kick, throw in or corner.
