Pretty much as the title suggests, F1 will be won by the driver who wins the most races.
Points will only come into it, if there's a tie.

 source?

Why do they have to keep messing with the rules. The FIA's constant interferene is one of the reasons I admired Schumacher so much - they constantly changed the rules to handicap him, yet he still won.

This make me want Hamilton to win it even more - clearly somebody at FIA HQ got pissed off that the guy with most wins did not win the title.

Why can't they just leave the points system alone?

This also gives people like kubica no chance because they are not going to win more races than ferrari/brawn/mclaren what a stupid rule...
What i dont get either is what happens if you finish 2'nd/3'rd ECT, Dont you get anything for that??

Formula 1 has introduced a new points system that will see the driver with most wins crowned world champion.

The current points system will still operate to decide a tie if two drivers have the same wins and to define all other championship positions.

Had the new rules been in place in 2008, Lewis Hamilton would have lost the title to runner-up Felipe Massa.

From 2010, there will be an optional budget cap of £30m that will reduce some teams' spending by 90%.

The new rules were approved by the World Motor Sport Council of governing body the FIA at a meeting in Paris on Tuesday.

It rejected a proposal by the F1 Teams' Association to tweak the points system to 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 from first to eighth places.

Instead, the current 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 system will stay in place.

The budget cap is an attempt to make F1 more accessible to new teams.

Teams choosing to operate within the budget cap will be allowed more technical freedom.

Those teams will be allowed: a more aerodynamically efficient (but standard) underbody; movable wings; an engine which is not subject to a rev limit or a development freeze.

Teams can choose to spend what they like, but operate within more restrictive technical rules - and therefore have a theoretically slower car.

Hamilton 'won' with 5 wins, over Massa's 6.

As radio man just said, someone could get off to a flyer this season, win the first 7 events and go on holiday from around the end of June.

Yup, points will be used to decide all other championship positions and decide if two or more drivers are tied on wins.

LOL
So if someone finishes 2'nd Every single race and say has 20 more points & has been more consistent all season than the person with the most wins they dont get the title...?
Why is it every season they change things that dont need to be changed

What a bunch of shit. They are still going to have points for everything except the Drivers champion (although they'll still have points for that too should race wins be tied). As I said...bunch of shit.

Sad state of affairs isn't it? Win the first 9 races, and the title is yours by 12th July.

This could be the most boring and tedious season of F1 in history, and that's including the seasons Schumacher walked away with the titles.

Ludicrous decision. Some of the most entertaining F1 viewing is watching a top driver meet with adversity at the start of a race but then scythe his way to a podium finish. That achievment gets devalued under the proposed changes.

And imagine if the Premiership changed the rules so the winners were a side with 23 wins and 15 losses over a side with 22 wins, 16 draws and no losses...

Yes, yes it does.

Remember 2004? Schumacher was winning (almost) every race and the only thing that made it worth watching was Kimi Raikonnen in the McLaren coming second every race and only winning when Schumi messed up, keeping the title open until the final race.

Clearly the FIA don't fancy anymore of this excitement.

Massa only had more wins than Hamilton last year because the FIA gifted him the win in Belgium anyway.

I will laugh my arse off if Ferrari turn out to be the consistent 2nd placers this season and would have walked away with the title, but don't get it because they didn't convert any of those to wins.

The FIA are a total bunch of wasters and this decision just about proves it.

Just when it was looking like we might get an exciting season as well. :nono:

Clearly they just want to ensure that ferrari win because lets face it we all should of seen this crap coming a mile off
What is funny thou how they said they wanted to level the playing field by "Budget Capping" and now they seem to of contridicted themselves....
