What a horrible, sad spectacle that was last night, I know its Hartlepool but damning confirmation of what some people in this country have become. Booing a Polish lady because she said she's been racially abused since the referendum vote, disgusting !!

I understand the concept of referenda. I understand the legislation. I don't profess to understand every intricacy of the issue um being asked to vote on although I expect I understand more than some and less than others

any politician that declares they dont like referendums as Clarke admitted, is a cvnt, they hate the fact they lose power in referendums

I happen to agree with Ken Clarke about referendums, and this is not a recently adopted position - I have always felt so. Our system of government is a parliamentary democracy. That means that MP's are there to do the homework and make the hard and important decisions. The risk of a referendum is that people don't make their mind up until the last minute, are voting because of the last Sun (or Guardian) leader that they read, don't really know anything about the issues or the implications.

Atleast gary in the audience last night did say that he and other had done the research, and I respect him for that although I totally disagree with the conclusion he came to.

But when he was calling for positivity because he is fed up with seeing all the negativity from the media and the politicians, many of the politicians might be finding it very difficult to see any positives at the moment. Let's face it, the referendum result has divided this country more sharpoly than anything else for decades. I actually had some faith that Theresa May would be a safe pair of hands who might be able to see it through in a sensible way (and that doesn't mean I hoped she might call a second referendum or anything like that), but she has blown that faith out of the water.

Yes, MP's do work for us. That doesn't mean they have to agree with what they might have to do. If the referendum vote had gone the other way, would UKIP have disbanded because the people had spoken? I don't think so. Nor will Remainers just roll over and die.

she was booed because she claimed she was no longer welcome here, she claimed 52% of the voters no longer wanted her here, she claimed the majority of the people voted against (specifically) the poles.....she deserved to be booed, ....she played a ridiculous victim card

As soon as someone uses an expression like "you people" or "these people", I always fear that what is going to follow is going to be based on ignorant and bigoted prejudice, the sort that can dismiss a whole section of the community as being all "the same", whether they be Poles, Remainers, Brexiters, Muslims or Palace fans.

I suspect that you know what I am hinting at, most of us are similar in nearly all aspects of voting for something, but I do not think it is unique to only referenda, but it seems quite interesting that many lend this argument to this particular referenda which in this instance are nearly exclusively from people that voted Remain.

PS, I am trusting you that it is 'referenda' and I shall use it from now on
