I only found out recently that he was a song writer, composing Mrs Brown you've Got a Lovely Daughter for Herman's Hermits, Gossip Calypso for Bernard Cribbens and a few of Joe Brown's songs.

I remember him as a particularly villainous Quilp in a BBC version of The Old Curiousity Shop.

He was clearly a talented man who was more than a character in VoD.

I didn't know that. Ray Purchase is, IMHO, one of the best character names ever. His name always makes me smile.
