We went out to Worthing's excellent Egremont pub last night for drinks and something to eat.

When I went to the bar for our first drinks, I asked either one of these (I can't remember my exact words):

"Are you still doing food?", or "Are you still serving food?"

The barman checked the clock, it was a little after 8, and said something like "Yes, until 9."

We perused the menu over our first drinks and around 8:40 I went to the bar to get another round of drinks and order some food whereupon I was told they'd finished food and were taking no more orders. I checked my watch and it was 8:44.

I posted this on a Worthing food & drink page on FB, and it sparked a fair bit of debate, with some thinking I was in the wrong and I was ordering too late. Even if the barman was stating that food was served until 9, at no point did he indicate I'd need to order by a certain time in order to get food.

Given what I have described, would you expect to still be able to order food at 8:44?

You are not in the wrong. If any of my staff did that they would be suspended pending a disciplinary. Food delivery is all about consistency, you never chop and change the timings. If a table of ten orders with us at 20:59 it gets done without question.

the owner is a local bloke ....he will probably say the chef got a nose bleed or the oven broke.

I think that would be chancing it, I'd expect the landlord and the chef taking turns to empty their nostrils in your soup if you demanded a freebie.

Having worked in catering industry for ages this is ridiculous.....many a time when we close at say 10pm checks have started coming out the printer at 9.57+ and the kitchen just deal with it!!

I actually had similar at the new Fusion Sushi place(name escapes me) near Norfolk Square the other week. Was deciding what to have for dinner at about 9.45pm and saw that they closed at 10....walked in and up to counter only to be told they closed!! Checked time and sign again and pointed out to owner only to be told 'kitchen actually closes at 10!'.........shite customer service and shant be going back even if it does get great reviews!!

Interesting that on More Radio on Thursday morning Anna Bingham was advertising their quiz night held every Thursday and in so doing said that good food was available every day until 9.00pm and I thought of this thread
