Going to get political here, as I expect I did in the other thread.
I've two shops on the seafront. I pay all my taxes, VAT and rates, as do all the other small independant shops in town (well most).
And yet I never see a copper on the streets during the day. I lose around £20 a day of goods to shoplifters but calling the police is a waste of time as they never turn up. Serious attack in the chip shop next door with 6 guys beating up 1 guy, no police.
A bloke filled his shopping bag with my stuff and I followed him on a 999 call, no police.
A group causing trouble in the block of 3 shops including one of mine, harrasing staff, opening cans of drink and being a nuisance. No police.
So when these shows come up on TV showing 10's of coppers all on duty overnight I know why there are no police on the streets during the day. It's not a lack of police, it's that they are working the wrong shift for the majority of Brightonians.

We have touched on this before but what sort of communication do you have with the BID team and the BCRP?

You may feel you have exhausted all avenues with those organisations But I’d like to see if I can get you some help with this.

Jake did a great job talking down the domestic violence abuser who threatened to throw himself out of the window, last night. Domestic violence takes up so much police time because they have to follow up on desperate calls, but once the partner is 'safe' they won't support a prosecution. It is extremely frustrating.
The police have to answer because two women a week are killed by their partners (I know domestic violence isn't restricted to male/female) and there is pressure from government to bring down domestic violence figures. It is a vicious circle.

I'm known to use the occasional swear word but the way people launch into the tirade of abuse at the police is both comical but also sad in equal measure.

That's just obfuscating the issue and gives the Authorities something (else) to hide behind. In the instances he mentioned he really should be able to call the police and they really should turn up.

My son's mate was attacked outside Chalk last year and the Night Coppers film crew were there before the police. My son told them to do one and his mate refused to allow the footage to be used, despite the production company's begging.

The sad reality is that the police force is stretched to breaking point.

If a call comes in about a shoplifter or disturbance at a retail site, it will be low priority compared to some of the jobs police get called to.

That’s not making excuses, it’s just the reality at the moment.

My concern is that he is dealing with these incidents on his own. Which can be mentally exhausting. Not to to mention, dangerous.

My only intention is to open a dialogue to see if we can find some kind of solution.

We are having a PM chat about it and we’ll see if there is something that can be done.

I don’t feel the police are hiding behind other bodies. There is a very close working relationship between police, BID, and BCRP.

However, I’m not a spokesperson for any of these bodies so we’ll se if we can put them in touch and let them handle it.

The police numbers were decimated between 2010 & 2019, at least 21,000 down as well as the rest of the Criminal Justice System. All small police stations have gone, sold off, money into government coffers.

Yes, fair comment, I do understand the funding issues, but it is frustrating when the police appear to 'do nothing'. And well done you for offering to help, you're a decent bloke.

If it’s any consolation, from my work with police, they get just as frustrated.

Appreciate police organisation not perfect but such a shame to see the complete disrespect towards them these days. We were not angels in our youth but no way would we even of spoken back to a policeman let alone be agressive towards them.
Have spent many busy night out abroad and from what I have seen behaviour like that would be dealt with with more than a clip round the ear and they dont hang around for more.
How times have changed. I remember stealing some sweets from Woolworths as a kid and spent next few weeks everytime door bell went thinking it was the police.

Sorry to hear all this. Sounds like a nightmare.
For my pubs here in Bristol it feels like all the police responsibilities have mostly been handed to the BID and Special Constables (or whatever theyre called). We are encouraged to contact our SC first. That's something they've been proactive on but feels led as much by the BID as the police.
Crazy really because anything minor can mostly be handled by my staff and I, when we need the police the really need the police (and ambulances etc).
There's clearly a lack of numbers and those that are working are tied up in certain areas and at certain times.
Our BID try, but it's frustrating that the core systems that are supposed to be keeping our businesses safe, and our customers safe are clearly so stretched.
Incidentally, they're definitely doing something. Five minutes outside is a deafening chorus of various sirens and engines squealing but they're clearly very stretched.
