Cartwright also kept six clean sheets, but was spread over a few months as he was injured. Then came the Cheltenham game and it all went belly up for Cartwright.

he didn't actually play THAT badly though that day if i remember correctly. obviously, any recollection was blurred by the memory of the burger van being on fire. our shocker that day was down more to the fact the team arrived 30 minutes before kick off, matt wicks had a shocker and i think somebody - maybe cullip - got sent off

Its a bit of a myth that Rust has a bad keeper. He was actually a good keeper who was recognised by England at U16's, U18's & U21's. Who can forget his performance against Leicester at Filbert Street in the Coca Cola Cup.

I think he gets a lot of unfair critism on here. Wev'e had a hell of a lot of worse keepers than Nicky Rust.

Yes but you wouldn't recognize a good keeper if he kicked you into touch.

that wasn't bennett was Alan Nicholls of plymouth

was a fantastic young keeper that shilton signed form non league cheltenham before leaving plymouth and drifting into non league and being killed in a motorbike accident

I loved Nıicky Rust... but I think my love was coloured by how good he was in Championship Manager. When the Seagulls won the Champions League he was man of the match. He went on to get 105 caps for England.

Bit different from the reality I think.

I thought Rust was a reasonably good keeper to be honest in a struggling team. Not the tallest in the world but certainly agile enough.

You can't wage a one man war against defenders. I think with the exception of Peter Smith, he didn't have an awful lot of cover to be fair.

I also thought Rust was ok. It was a shame that he lost it. I understand that Mark Ormerod also played in a band.

Mark Ormerod was the better keeper.

I remember seeing him at the 4-4 draw with Colchester on boxing day at Gillingham, every time he cleared the ball it curled off into the crowd. He was a decent shot stopper (although conceeding 4 in that game doesn't really show that!)

He was a decent chap Nicky - lived with Junior McDougald. I used to see them quite a bit in Sainsburys.

Loads of the players used to be seen smoking at clubs in those days, even though Liam Brady apparently banned any of his players for having a puff.

Remember on one eventful night seeing Kevin McGarrigle sitting on the floor in the Event smashed out of his mind with a beer in one hand and a fag drooping out of his mouth. The 'Midfield Pirate' (Jeff Minton) stepped over him and walked towards me and I couldn't believe how small he was that close up. I told him he was the greatest player we'd had in weeks(!) and he did me the honour of not nutting me

Later on I got introduced to Phil Andrews who was totally up his own arse, Simon Fox who didn't know much about anything, but managed to cop off with 2 of the girls (twins) who were in the group i was with... the twins later claimed to have shagged the whole youth team...nice.

Nicest guy was Darragh Ryan who at least was up for having a chat and a laugh...

oh the burger van day .... didnt they score from their first two corners and the a 30 yard soft shot that Cartwright misjudged
I liked him as a goalie ...very brave...came on as sub for Kuipers at half time at southend and played a blinder
