It makes me laugh how the Swallows Return seems to be held in such high esteem - imo its just pub grub in a barn setting. Nice enough but not outstanding

The Toby's (George and Downlands) are your everyday carvery...ditto Highdown Towers. Nice enough if you like carvery's but I've not heard anything good about the one at the Downlands. When I went to the George there was no gravy on offer! NO GRAVY! :(

I think the Smugglers is an indian now but I'll check

My suggestion would be the Wheatsheaf - run by a guy I know and the chef is ex of Red in Worthing - very good food and the sunday roast is outstanding.

.

I have been to the Downlands and as you say it is a run of the mill Carvery but excellant VFM, cheap and reasonable quality and at least you know what you will be getting with a choice of 3 meats.

I have never in my life been to a carvery either Toby, Ember Inns or Beefeater where there has been no gravy available it is usually placed on an adjoining or opposite table with the horse radish, apple sauce etc.

We did look and it definitely wasn't there! Appaling! Mind you, the same night there was only half the selection of meat there normally is, so I think they had a supply problem going on

Out of all the carverys I would say Highdown is the best, and occasionally have buy one get one free offers which makes them very good value

Black Horse at Binsted (near Arundel) has always been good for a Sunday lunch. Roast dinners are nice as are their other dishes.

Good call, but a bit far out, from the original question.
I notice from a fair few suggestions that there's quite a lot of chained pubs being mentioned, I'm sure you can do better than that.

NNNOOOOOOOoooooo

I liked the Smuggs. :(

But it is a very nice Indian, it's within walking distance of our house and we've been there twice since it was opened, smashing both times. It's a bit more upmarket than your average curry house.

Tides at the top of Aldsworth Avenue is good.

Food Restaurant in the centre of town excellent.

The Fox is good.

Would avoid Worlds End and Swallows Return, distinctly average IMO.

Avoid Food restaurant, The restaurant is my neighbour and the owner is possibly the most arrogant and vile man i have ever had the pleasure to meet. When i told him his party that was going on at 1 am on a monday was keeping my 1 year old awake he told me if i didnt like it i could move or go to the council. And he has these crappy parties once a month.

The Fox Is By The Far The Best Of All The Suggestions So Far

I've not been there for years, making it difficult for me to argue in favour of The Tudor Close, but I that's my favourite.

Is the guy from RED actually cooking there? I thought he'd just devised the menu and was concentrating on his own businesses. If he's in the kitchen then I would also recommend this place as he is a top chef.
