I think you are hitting on the problem. 'Our' best players are not actually ours and who lines up for us next year is open to doubt.

We have the current keeper (not under contract)
Our current full backs (both loan signings)
Lua Lua and others in midfield (on loan)
Ashley Barnes up front (on loan)

The only player who Gus has bought is Holroyd who is best described as disappointing.

I do not doubt that who we have bought in are costing plenty and many are a class above this division. We are only paying their wages though and not any transfer fees. We need to keep our feet on the ground and hope that Gus is actually able to buy, yes buy decent players who can make a winning team for the future. I doubt they will be of the standard of the loanees. I cannot see Tony paying the prices but hopefully they will see us into the playoffs.

BBC Sport - Football - Notts County to tear up Kasper Schmeichel deal

Notts County have agreed to release goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old Dane was reported to be on £15,000 a week after being signed in the short-lived Munto Finance revolution last summer.
The former Manchester City man, named in the League Two team of the season, had four years left on his deal.
Chairman Ray Trew said: "To hold out for a possible transfer fee was too big a risk for this football club."

Thats all well and true but gus could just be trying them out, holroyd is a prime example we brought him straight away and what has he done NOTHING apart from show us he is incapable of scoring. What if gus bought loads of players next year who havent already proven them self at the club and they turn out to be rubbish?? I like his strategy of trying before possibly buying.
