Had to smile, is the OP a Chelsea supporter, apart from "other" four out of the six candidates are Chelsea players...one washed up, another not in squad, another a known troublemaker in previous England camps....that leaves Cahill.

I see the papers are quoting Rooney as saying next time England need to "get nasty" because we are currently "too honest".

If he becomes captain we wil have well and truly reached the nadir - being led by an illiterate chav who has failed in major tournaments who also suggests cheating as the main way we can improve.

Pick the best TEAM (not necessarily individual players) and choose one of them as Captain on a match by match basis.

What does an England Captain do anyway? Press conferences and shaking hands? They certainly don't appear to be intelligent enough to change things on the pitch if they are not working, so does it really matter anyway? Afterall, the England team are supposed to be the cream of the crop, they should know how to play and how to react to adversity. And in our best tournament of recentish times (1990), we played better after our Captain was injured (and in 1986 as well). And in 2002 our "beloved" England captain led by example by jumping out of tackles.

Would any of those be guaranteed to start either the euros in 2016 or World Cup 2018. The captain must command a place to start with, so the answer for any of those to be captain has to be No.
I would say they will all be first-choice players now going forward, Cahill and Jagielka will be the central defensive partnership for a good few years.
