Tension builds as decision looms
By Simon Barrett

Albion bosses are waiting for the letter that will reveal the Government's decision on the planned Falmer stadium - and decide the future of the club.

After ten years without a permanent home, the club will find out by Wednesday whether the application to build the 22,000- seat arena at Falmer has been approved.

Almost two years ago there were celebrations when John Prescott approved the stadium.

But this decision was quashed in the High Court months later.

Albion chairman Dick Knight revealed the club was the last to hear the good news of the initial approval. The Government had blundered by sending letters to all interested parties - except the club.

Albion chief executive Martin Perry yesterday said he was hoping to hear the news firsthand this time.

advertisementMr Perry said: "Last time the actual applicants were not even sent a letter - we were the last to hear of the decision!

"We had phone calls from the city council and the University of Brighton telling us the news.

They faxed us the letter but the decision was on page 16 so we were standing there tearing the pages off the fax machine before we could see it in black and white.

"I'm sure we'll hear the same time as everyone else this time - but it's all about getting the right decision."

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) yesterday confirmed interested parties will be notified by a "decision letter".

They will also be sent an email on the day the letter is due to arrive.

The campaign backing the stadium is in its final stages.

Yesterday a group of Labour MPs from Brighton and Hove delivered a letter to communities secretary Hazel Blears urging her to grant permission for the stadium.

David Lepper, Des Turner and Celia Barlow were joined by prospective parliamentary candidates for Brighton Kemptown and Brighton Pavilion, Simon Burgess and Nancy Platts. The delegation handed the letter over at DCLG headquarters in Westminster.

Meanwhile, fans wait anxiously as the decision looms.

Paul Samrah, chairman of the Falmer For All campaign, said: "We've done all we can and it's just a waiting game now. I feel hopeful and expectant but also apprehensive.

"We'll know the fate of the club by Wednesday."

The decision was due at the start of the month but was delayed after new Prime Minister Gordon Brown reshuffled the cabinet and appointed Ms Blears in place of Ruth Kelly.

....

When the news came about the re-opening of the Public Inquiry, I received it through the post, put it on NSC and then got a phone call from the Club asking me to read the letter over the phone so that they could find out exactly what had been said.

hmmmm....
