Cracking news. Every chance Rafa will leave, their big stars (er... Shelvey) will be sold during the window, and their results will collapse and they will be relegated.

Or.... 'the Chinese' (yes, all of them) will buy the club, invest heavily during the window, and catapault them up the table (above us, anyway).

May I have the first option, please?
"The Chinese" have a cracking record so far of buying clubs and making them even more shit than they were.

So I'm all for this plan.

Mike Ashley has officially announced his intention to sell Newcastle and hopefully to conclude a deal by Christmas - what do we think?

I think, possibly, they won't have a buyer by Christmas which is part of the plan. Ashley can use that to claim the club's not as attractive as the fans might think and so they're 'lucky' to have him and should stop their constant carping.

Just a guess.

Guaranteed that a group of local loyal Geordie businessmen will put together a consortium, with Alan Shearer as a figurehead.

There'll be lots of noise in the press about how they're trying to do a deal 'for the club and for the fans'.

It will all fall apart at the eleventh hour, amid mass recriminations.

Meanwhile Ashley will be quietly brokering a deal with an Indian / Qatari / US tycoon. This will be finalised without any fanfare through a month or two after the deadline, and ultimately be for less than the local group was offering.

Any coincidence that this was announced after the weekend's fixtures ? My guess is that there's a deal been (or being) brokered with some Indians who will announce that they've always been Newcastle fans.

I hope the new moneyed Chinese owners don't look at the table of managers on the BBC and think they can get an upgrade on Rafa...

Love the fact that Ashley has stated that he is willing to accept people paying by installments. If i was a Geordie, it would really fill me with confidence if the club was bought on HP!
