I have not been to NY for many years but when I did we stayed at The New Yorker.
I remember it being cheapish, good location on 8th Avenue and a good breakfast place on the ground floor.

I am surw some NY based people on here will be able to say what it is like now.
Stayed in the New Yorker myself in 08. Decent hotel and good location. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was they didn't inform me prior to arriving that I'd have to leave a sizeable deposit for the room. Think is was in the region of $300.
That's weird, never had to do that in any of my stays there (04,07,08,13).
How odd. Maybe it was because of my age (I was 19 at the time). Luckily I had enough money to tide me over.
