If you want a good bar near Times Square you can't beat the fantastic Jimmy's Corner, run by a former boxing trainer and decked out with masses of boxing memorabilia. Even if you're not a fan (and I'm not) it's quite a place, and a reminder of what it the area used to be like before it was sterilised.

Last time we stayed I went to the Millenium UN Plaza. This is by the UN building and starts on about the 40th Floor so gets some great views of the city at pretty reasonable (for NYC) rates. Also, it does have a swanky swimming pool which is glass all round with views of the city from way up high. It’s a really good hotel. This time we are staying in the Thirty Thirty Hotel, which is on the Intersection off 30th street for my wifes 30th birthday. I know, I know. Idiotic. For sites, The Statue of Liberty is surprisingly unimpressive, Ground Zero is eerie but a must see. I loved Madison Sq Garden and walking the Brooklyn bridge (towards Manhatton). There is so much to see, you can’t really go wrong.

Simster : Where is this Stout bar of which you speak? I’m short of decent bars in NYC.
133W 33rd between 6th and 7th if I remember correctly. It's the best SOCCER bar in town (especially downstairs), with the possible exception of Nevada Smiths in Greenwich Village which is a bit more Eurocentric.

Other faves:
If you're downtown, the best bar in the financial district is called Ulysses. Bit dead until Wed & Thurs and then livens up.
Greenwich = top birds, loads of great bars
My personal fave - try LE SOUK in Alphabet City. Cosy sort of feel, hookah pipes, decent music, great atmosphere in the evening but explodes into life at around midnight. Arguably my fave bar in the world.
Mind you, this place absolutely ROCKS in the Summer - pricey drinks, although you'll pull there if you're bothered:

As for accomodation, I've sayed at two quality hotels in the past 6 months. Expensive tho', good job I wasn't paying.)

1) Ritz Carlton in battery park. top drawer.
2) (last week) in the Hilton Millenium, overlooking Ground Zero. Great location but not as PLUSH.

Stayed in the Hotel Metro on 35th Street a couple of years ago. It was well positioned by the Empire State Building and the rooms were big by New York standards. I think its called 'moderately priced' which means its not cheap.

Last year a couple of friends stayed at the Salisbury Hotel on 57th Street and said it was perfect for 5 or 6 nights. Not as expensive as the Hotel Metro as it came as part of a package through expedia. Breakfast cost $3 apparently! They are going back again this year.

Might also be worth looking at www.tripadvisor.com for impartial hotel reviews.
