I am about to book a break in New York for the autumn but I could really do with some advice from anyone who has visited themselves.. Where is the best areas to stay in to visit the sights. Obviously looking for a good deal but if anyone has stayed in a fair hotel at a reasonable price I can look it up on the net and see if my budget stretches that far for me and my good lady wife.
Have surfed around but to be honest its so hard to actually find out where the best vicinities are as they all say they are ideally placed for one thing or another.

cheers in advance

On a train...
Ramada Plaza New Yorker, which Frutos will also vouch for.

Very reasonable prices by New York standards, and in a fantastic location, right by Madison Square Garden, and Penn Station, and only a few minutes away from Times Square.

Expedia seem to have the best deals for that hotel.

Was just about to make the precise same suggestion myself. :)

I'm going back in late August/early September, having stayed there at about the same time last year, and I can't fault it at all.

Also just round the corner from a FINE bar in which I spent a Wednesday night a couple of weeks back, called STOUT.

I've booked a few US holidays through a local company, americas4u so maybe give them a call and get a quote. They saved me over £200 on my last one so I'll defo use them again!

I've been four times now. I love the place. From experience if you can book a hotel on 34th Street near to Madison Square Garden and Penn Street Station (both across the road) you'll be fine for seeing the sights. What most people don't realise is that NYC is now a huge place to walk (so long as you're generally fit) blocks are easy to walk, I usually try and stop in a few coffee places on the way. You've also got the subway and countless taxi's. How long you planning on going for ?

5 or 6 nights depending on the cost. Its daunting though when you know so little about the areas. Just checked the Waldorf but at £ 1200.00 a night it might be a tad out of our league.

Neither here nor there
Stay in Greenwich Village. You're in the heart of the most interesting bit and an easy walk or cab ride from Battery Park, Central Park, Tribeca, Wall St etc. I stayed at a B&B in Bleeker St which was a bit dingy but then I only wanted to sleep there. A bit.

haha....i no that one. try the pensylvania, or i think its the ramada. i stayed there. to be honest, if you use new york to it's full potential, u will be out in the morning at the crack of dawn and then back mid afternoon to drop off purchases, then back out for dinner or just to walk the streets and get the real NYC feeling. by the time u get back to ur room, u r shattered and just fall asleep straight away. so the room really is only used for sleeping, so it could be as dingy as it wants because u dont use it for much else.

Few recommendations, Ground Zero, Empire State, Macys (dont get lost) Yankee Stadium (get a tour there or if the season is still on, see a game (done both) !!!), take the missus for a boat ride around manhattan island, its the best thing i did.

hope you find this lot helpful !!!

Here & there
The milford plaza right next to times square is ok. Not to far from central park, theaters, good bars & restaurants and very easy to get to all the sights. Book the empire state building & the statue of liberty on line before you go.

If you want somewhere a bit bizarre, but very conveniently located in central Manhattan, check out the Carlton Arms, where Roz and I stayed in 2002:-

You have to have a taste for art, though. And cats.

Virgo's Haircut has stayed there too. He seems to be recommending other places these days.

OK ... it's very bizarre.

My wife and I stayed at one right opposite of Maddison Sq Garden and Penn Station think it was called The Pennsylvania very reasonable,

Went in via Newark and caught the train to Penn Station (approx 1 hour from landing) much quicker than JFK and then the horrendous drive in to Manhattan from there, that takes ages.

get the tube or prebook a hotel transfer, rather than taxi to/from airport- bloody ripoff shisters they are!
Not really. JFK to Manhatten is a flat $45 + tolls + tip. Considering it took an HOUR and 15 minutes to get to JFK from the financial district (right at the bottom of Manhatten just north of Battery Park) on the Friday afternoon before last, I don't think that's too bad at all.

Having lived there for a few years, and commuted in and out of JFK, I'd have to say that anyone who takes the subway with their luggage is mad. also if you fly into Newark and catch the train to Penn State with all your luggage I also think you're mad, just my opinion though. If you want to save a fiver here or there then do it, but the taxi ride is usually part of the fun anyhow...

Best city in the world, been twice and can't wait to go again. Stayed at the Milford Plaza first time around and it was fine right on top of Times Square so pretty central and then stayed at the Pennsylvania bang opposite Madison Square Garden and Penn Street Station and round the corner from the Empire State Building.

Too much to see and do to list here just suffice to say you won't get bored! Fantastic place.

Last time we stayed I went to the Millenium UN Plaza. This is by the UN building and starts on about the 40th Floor so gets some great views of the city at pretty reasonable (for NYC) rates. Also, it does have a swanky swimming pool which is glass all round with views of the city from way up high. It’s a really good hotel. This time we are staying in the Thirty Thirty Hotel, which is on the Intersection off 30th street for my wifes 30th birthday. I know, I know. Idiotic. For sites, The Statue of Liberty is surprisingly unimpressive, Ground Zero is eerie but a must see. I loved Madison Sq Garden and walking the Brooklyn bridge (towards Manhatton). There is so much to see, you can’t really go wrong.

Simster : Where is this Stout bar of which you speak? I’m short of decent bars in NYC.
