New York City to ban smoking in parks, beaches and boardwalks

Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to make parks, beaches and boardwalks in New York smoking free zones with fines up to $250 for offenders. He says this is to make NYC a healthier place. Please – with all the other crap New Yorkers inhale what difference will this make. How long before this crosses the Atlantic to the UK. Nice little earner like speed cameras.

I had to laugh when I used a public phone box this week with massive gaps, top , bottom and sides when I saw a notice " smoking is prohibited in these premises " how utterly ridiculous.

I am a non-smoker and to be honest pretty anti-smoking if it is done anywhere near me, but this is taking it a bit too far, as long as smokers dispose of their fag-butts responsibly then why on earth shouldn't they smoke outdoors?

I've just come back from Spain and I love the way they TOTALLY flout the EU anti smoking laws, you can still smoke just about anywhere. I don't smoke anymore but I love the fact that the precious "don't smoke near me" crew just had to live with it. How people ever survived pre the 90's I'll never know as people smoked everywhere before then. Cars, houses, cinemas, buses, restaurants, shops etc etc.

And the Tube. The smoking carriages were always one from the front and one from the back. Difficult to believe now.

Good luck Unc, I went to a hypnotherapist in 1990 and never looked back, 40-a-day to zero in one four-hour session. Went to the pub that night and didn't miss the fags at all. Weird. Doesn't work for everyone, but no harm trying if you haven't already.

I think smoking should be banned in all public places tbh. During the summer, sitting outside pubs, to have people's fag smoke wafting over me was intrusive. The argument it should be allowed outside pubs is basically flawed if there is a sitting area

Can smoke joints in my local and many bars in my area
They seem to be doing it sensibly here with smoking and non smoking areas.
Bars and restaurants also have to display if they are smoking/non smoking or with separate areas.
All the clubs seem to be smoking and have to say, so are most of the bars and restaurants. Itll be a long time before it changes here. Noticed that more young girls smoke here than ive seen anywhere.
