On a train...
Anyone ever done NYE in Times Square, New York?

We are considering doing it, and wondered if anyone has experienced it?

My mate did it in 2005/2006. I don't know anything specific but he did say it was pretty boring and everyone was just standing around, that is quite a subjective view though.

YES !! I did it and saw 2005 in at Times Square.

I personally loved it, because I love New York City as a whole. I've done Trafalgar Square as well, but NYC beat that hands down.

Billy The Fish is right, there are millions of people, and to be honest to get a good area that is close to the centre of Times Square you would have to get there pretty early and just wait around for the majority of the day. Also it does get f***ing cold !!!

But then thats when the buzz starts to hit you, everyone is on a high. When we were there, there was people singing, shouting, dancing, just generally having a good time. I have never hugged so many strangers in all my days. And when the countdown started, the deafening roar of everyone shouting down the last seconds of the year and the again, deafening roar of the new year being celebrated was outrageous and something shouting at the TV screen in your home or in pub can't prepare you for. And then there was the ticker tape which was equally amazing !!! It got everywhere. Americans, IMHO, know how to do things in style and they don't do thigns half hearted like us brits.

I'd say go for it, because even if you don't enjoy the night, you still get to spend a few quality days and nights in the big apple which is the best city in the world.

Hope it helped. :)

And subway trains stop at about 11 i think. and resume at about 3ish. or if not that, then they are less frequent as per normal. But then, New York isn't that far to walk. Just a few blocks !!!!

It was horrific. We have been twice. The first time because we were tourists and brain dead the second time because my moronic sister in law got everything wrong and we couldn't get to where we were meant to be.

It's boring, it's cold, it's crowded and people piss in Starbucks cups.

I did it once and once only in the years I lived there....Wasn't really a highlight for me to be honest. I think it was the standing around waiting and not getting a good spot as we hadn't arrived at 7am that did it for me...I was frozen, drinkless and bored by the time midnight approached...

I went for 2001, stayed at the Paramount hotel just next door. Firstly, it was f***ing cold. You had to queue up at least 4 hours before midnight to get into Times Square and once in you had to stand in seperate fenced off pens and so couldn't mingle or wander in and out. There was nothing to do so we got bored, left and found a bar to see in the new year instead. No doubt come midnight it all went off but personally I would take a warm bar and cold beer over ice cold winds and over-excitable loonies.
I'd say go to New York but I'm sure there are better things to do than stand in Times Square.
