Had honestly never thought about it u till a recent accident. Found out at that time I have rare blood type AB negative to those in the know. Still not 100% sure what that is or how rare. I was never in danger but did require blood. Now do on a regular basis and will continue to do so. Never know who you will help

They won't let me here, as I was in the UK during the Thatcher years, shame really as I was a regular when I was there.

I used to donate, & then had to start taking thyroxine for hypothyroidism so I wasn't allowed to.
Recently they changed the rules about some medications, so I'm booked in for 19th January. I'm A positive.

Gave blood for nigh on 30 years until a heart condition was diagnosed. One of the easiest and most practical ways people can make a contribution to society in general and the NHS in particular.

I can't, but its thanks to people who do that I'm here at all. Ironic really that its the fact that I have received the benefits of blood donations that prevents me from returning the favour, but there you go.

Can I add to this. I started donating when my daughter was born and her mother needed lots of blood. Over the years I made 80+ donations, only stopping when I hit the age bar, which I think was 70, so haven't been able to donate for several years. It only takes a few minutes to donate and is possibly one of the most worthwhile things you will ever do. Go for it.

I've never given blood because I was scared but may well need some if my anaemia doesn't improve. Total respect to everyone that has.

Used to be a regular right up until my Type1 diagnosis.

In case anyone doesn't already do it - you go in, answer a few questions, have a lie down while people tell you how fantastic you are, then you get to drink tea and eat wagon wheels. And you are literally, actually saving lives. DO IT.

The best thing is when they send you a text message telling you where your blood went. My first donation went to Birmingham children's hospital. The chance that I could have played a small part in saving a child's life was all I needed to make me a regular.

I'd love to do this again but you can't ever get an appointment at my local centre - the next 5 are all fully booked. I'd like to think this is because so many people now do it, but I suspect it is more due to a lack of funding and sessions...

I used to give blood often as it was a noble thing and also helped me as I was getting regular nosebleeds (I was producing too much blood anyway!) I always felt great afterwards with the glow of righteousness and a genuine feeling of healthiness. Then they changed the rules and as I was born in Singapore there is a risk I have malignant malaria and they didn't want to/couldn't test me. I still carry the little gold card around with me next to my donor card in case of an accident.
