New type of speed camera

On the A24 southbound at the intersection of the road from Partridge Green the previous speed camera has been replaced with one that faces the oncoming traffic. Next to it is another contraption that looks like a mirror on a pole.

How do these work? Same way as the old ones? The white lines (which they presumably use for calculating your speed) are still on the road.

The French use a forward facing camera and as far as I'm aware there are no lines on the road, sounds like this one may be the same.

I heard they were introducing digital ones which don't flash so you won't have a clue if they've got you until a nice letter arrives through the post.

the lines on the road are not to calulate the speed but to provide visual evidence in court and to verfiy the equipment is functioning correctly.

I noticed it yesterday, too.

The biggest problem is that, whilst the box is painted yellow, it's not as obvious until you're past it and can see the yellow box in your rear view mirror!

If it doesn't flash either, it's really not cricket at all. Bastards!

All fixed speed cameras in France are preceeded by a huge sign announcing that part of the road is radar controlled. Once you're past the camera you can speed with alacrity, unless they have one of the mobile camers a few hundred yards down the road!!

The advantage of this one, for the camera safety partnerships, is that they snap you as you approach...it is therefore far easier to determine who was behind the wheel and far harder for a partner/spouse to claim they were driving and pick up the points instead.

True but I've still managed to get three tickets in the last two years as they give pretty well no leeway on the speed, unlike here. Last one was for doing 118kms in a 110km zone. No complaints about getting the tickets as I was speeding..just, but on a long drive it makes driving a bit of a pain because with modern cars it's so easy to go over the limit especially on clear motorways, which abound in France. Having to keep taking your eyes off the road to check your speed is probably just as dangerous as moderate speeding imo.

Big advantage in France is that the fine is generally 45 euros and no points on your licence, well not on mine anyway as it's English.

They had to do this, because it's technically against the law to accept a speeding ticket, if you are not sure who was driving. Not that it ever stopped the fuckers trying to force a ticket and a fine on you, but I think to many people are telling them where to stick their speeding tickets, that they eventually had to start getting better evidence against speeding drivers, ie your face and not the back of your head in the photo.

Get a motorbike.

With crash helmet and only a rear number plate it makes a joke of forward facing cameras.

Cameras that snap the front of a car will catch out the arseholes who put bikes on the back obscuring their number plates. This is a practice which is becoming more prevelant, that could easily be stamped out just by making the law such that the car reg no should be displayed on the bike carrier, as in fact some people do do.

I'm told they are only testing it and nobody will be prosecuted for speeding. I still wouldn't chance it though.

I do hope you're correct Doug. I only discovered the change of camera last Saturday. I was doing between 60-70 and slowing for the rear facing cameras, only to be staring head on at the new stlye one.

Don't like it that they don't flash so you're left waiting for the letter to drop through the letterbox anyday.

The camera at Partridge Green is a digital one but it works both forward and rear facing - hence the two ses of lines before and after the camera. I've seen it in use both ways. As far as I know it IS being used for prosecuting people so I wouldn't take the chance.

What is interesting is that when they installed it they made a big play of it not being hidden as it was painted yellow. This was fine when it was only being used rear facing but now they have turned it round it doesn't meet the requirements for making the suitably visable.

Forward cameras aren't new - they have had them in Hampshire for ages as there are two on the way out of Portsmouth that I know of.
